2026 NBA Trade Discussion Thread

It isn't hindsight at all.

Many of us were beating that drum right when the deadline came and went to extend him. It was as easy then as it is now to predict that he's going to generate a high offer in the RFA market.
I don't know how many times I have to tell folks that the Jazz didn't negotiate at all for them to get it. This is beyond just Best Buy guys... this is knowledge.

Jazz said "how about qualifying offer... we want to preserve cap space".

Walker was like "yeah no let's talk real numbers".

Jazz - "Nah we really want cap space we like you but we aren't gonna do it.

Walk - "Well where would you be if we didn't have this cap space dance so I can get an idea of how you value me"

Jazz -"No thanks we good here have a great season... also be cool at the press conference please".

Its not the fact that they didn't get it done. There may have been a gap. They didn't even see if they could get it done. Walker's camp wasn't asking for max or some ****. They simply want to work on a number... Jazz wouldn't even fake it.

Tim McMahon is reporting that the Jazz and Walker are far apart on extension expectations. I think that's the main story. The idea that we're preserving cap space makes some sense too and would have given the Jazz some flexibility, but the main question is what his next deal is going to look like. A cap-space team is going to need to offer him something big. Jazz are taking that bet and must be willing to live with the consequences.
We are only far apart because Jazz said "15M or nothing" and Walk said "let's talk about that" and the Jazz said no.

I actually think hindsight is more favorable to the Jazz decision on Kessler. There are some Walker destinations who have seemingly taken themselves out of the running. Did they predict that? Probably not, but I would say I am more optimistic about it today than a week ago.

Still, the Jazz were in a better position to negotiate before the season than now. They are still at the mercy of Kessler and other teams who could offer sheet him. Teams like LAC, CHI, and some others could still ruin our day and our best plan of action is to work with the guy we pissed off (he’s pissed off for good reason).

I think things broke the right way and they may get lucky but I would bet we could have got better numbers and structure on an extension than we will end up getting. I just think it won't come back to hurt them much... but they are still open to getting smacked AND they have now lost any potential benefit of the delayed decision - we didn't trade him in season even though you got as good of an offer as could be expected and you won't be using cap space.

The only hope to "win" this dance is grinding him lower than he would have agreed to in the offseason, but we didn't even get to what that number is. Its this weird inconsistent treatment that bothers me. Its similar to the Kuminga stuff where they don't want to pay him but have these big asks in a trade.

I think they come out of this with maybe only a slight wound but it won't be because they were smart lol.

It is hindsight in that it is hard to build a team with a player like Walker Kessler as a major piece. We tried it with a better version of Kessler and failed.

It appears the Jazz were serious about adding another piece either at the deadline or the offseason. There was a non-zero chance that player would conflict with Kessler. Instead we found the best possible match for Kessler.

What does it look like if we had the chance to get Giannis but we couldn't get there because we signed Kessler early? It would have been possible le to do the Giannis deal THEN sign Kessler and we would be golden.

Signing Kessler early had opportunity costs as well. And yes, if I am Kessler I wouldn't much care at the time the negotiations were happening. He would want security.

Good news is that we are bringing him back, he is going to get paid, and we have put him in the best possible place to succeed.
