ALT LAKE CITY (February 21, 2012) – The NBA announced today that Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors has been added to the 2012 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge that will take place on Friday, February 24 in Orlando, during NBA All-Star 2012. Favors will join teammate Gordon Hayward, who was previously selected to the game, on TEAM CHUCK. The two will be Utah’s first participants in the event since Ronnie Brewer and Paul Millsap played for the sophomore team during the 2008 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.

A 2010 first-round draft pick (third overall) out of Georgia Tech, the 6-10, 246-pound forward was acquired by Utah from New Jersey on February 23, 2011. The second-year forward is currently averaging 8.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per game this season. On December 30, Favors notched a new career-high scoring 20 points while pulling down 11 rebounds vs. Philadelphia. The forward has scored in double figures nine times this season, grabbed 10+ rebounds four times, and registered a double-double on three occasions.

Favors and Hayward will be the sixth and seventh players in Jazz history to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge (formerly the Rookie Challenge), joining Bryon Russell (1994), Andrei Kirilenko (2002, 2003), Deron Williams (2006, 2007), Paul Millsap (2007, 2008) and Ronnie Brewer (2008).

This year, a new format is being implemented to a game that has historically featured NBA rookies facing off against sophomores. For the first time, rookies and sophomores will be mixed together on teams. TNT analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal are serving as the general managers of the two opposing teams - TEAM CHUCK and TEAM SHAQ – having held a draft on Feb. 16.

TNT Analysts Mike Fratello and Steve Kerr will be part of the coaching staffs for the teams, with Fratello joining TEAM CHUCK and Kerr joining TEAM SHAQ. The head coaches for both teams will be the lead assistant coaches from the 2012 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs, Ron Adams (Chicago) and Maurice Cheeks (Oklahoma City).

The BBVA Rising Stars Challenge will be televised live nationally on TNT at 7 p.m. MT and also will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio, while NBA.com will make live audio available to fans in multiple languages. NBA games are broadcast to 215 countries and territories in more than 40 languages.

NBA All-Star brings together the top NBA players and performers for a week of competition, community service and world-class entertainment. Among the many other exciting All-Star events are Sprite Slam Dunk, Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Haier Shooting Stars and NBA All-Star Jam Session.

Yay!!

Did they forget about Pekovic or are they counting his years in Europe against him? Splitter did the same though.

Curious to see how Favors plays with Cousins, and defends Blake. Ill be rooting for team Chuck.

Man I hope Favors, Kanter and Burks take this as an insult and just "insert swear word of choice" crazy on the league.

Defense? Do not watch this game if you are looking for defense. Worse than the real All Star game.

Ive never cared to watch the rookie vs sophomore game, so I don't know how it was going to compare to the all-star game.

I feel like Chuck and Shaq are going to take this pretty seriously, so I figured it would be a little bit better than the all-star game.

If they could get them to take it seriously it might take on aspects of a real game. Granted you will probably see some crazy dunks though.

I want to see 35+ points, 12+ rebounds, 6+ assits and a few blocks and steals thrown in for flavor from Favors and Hayward combined. I want them to just dominate.

I wonder if he were to tear up this game if it would generate more interest in him? I wonder if KOC and Ty will be faced in the coming months more pressure to play and develop Favors, Kanter, Hayward, etc to develop them and get them more established in this team's system? Obviously, I don't see our Big 4 bigs staying together for much longer. Some will either leave via FA or will demand trades. We have 4 competent bigs and yet only 2 of them get PT and touches.

This game certainly will not get him more PT, but if we continue to sink below .500 that might do it.

If Favors doesn't get 20+ points, 10+ rebounds and 2 blocks in this game, trade him right now. It's obvious he's never going to be more than a decent starting player anyways.

I wasn't meaning that....

I was meaning if he gets more attention from other NBA teams. Lets say he plays well.

Other NBA teams may take notice. KOC may feel pressure to pull the trigger to move some pieces to get Favors more PT to see what he truly can do/lock him up for a longer contract. Ty may feel more pressure to play him and redesign the offense.

Does anyone really see the jazz becoming a playoff team/title contender while keeping all 4 bigs together? Someone is going to go, either by their own choice of by KOC's.

This game is lame. But a few stars might find a way to shine. This is the kind of game Alec Burks could go off in. Too bad he's not in it.

Sloan picked Barkley to be his presenter at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Now, you've got 2 guys from the Jazz who'll be playing on Barkley's team.

Karma can be a scary thing...
