KOC Trade Deadline Interview

How can He say we're conpetetive for a playoff spot? Who in the hell shoots for being an eighth seed? And even worse, he's content with that? The trade deadline is a great opportunity to make the most of your assets. Why not capitalize on that? When is this team going to hunt down a championship? One thing you can notice that the Lakers do is they do what ever it takes to stay at the top. I realize that they have Kobe and much much much more $$$ to spend, but before Koc came around the Jazz were that way too. Now we are content with the 8TH SEED! Why would you not want to get better? AM I WRONG? WHAT DO YOU THINK? I JUST SEE KOC WAISTING US YEAR AFTER YEAR!

I can live with nothing done if Ty does the right thing and plays guys based on their performance. If Bell gets what he wants just for being a clueless, selfish child, absolutely nothing good will come of it

I'm fully cognizant of the domino effect with NBA trades at the deadline. Given our roster and other assets, I fully expected us to be downstream from some bigger deals. So, if those didn't happen, and KOC couldn't put other beneficial deals together because of that... fine. I'm just surprised we couldn't get a couple of picks for players that we don't need or even want at this point. Surprised.

I was also hoping for these trades because Ty needed some saving from himself. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the distribution of minutes this evening. Not surprised, however, at his going to a late-game strategy that won't work.

We always hear a lot about how he's "always listening". Never once has their been any indication, whether subtle or otherwise, that they've ever been proactive about improving the team. The approach has always been passive until their hand is forced. Over the past ten years, how many decisions have been delayed until passivity forced us into a direction? The situation with Andrei, where every year as the trade deadline would pass we'd talk about how "oh this summer he'll be a real asset in trade," then as training camp arrives "oh, well we'll keep him until the deadline when his value will be a lot higher." Numerous red flags have been raised about numerous players in the past (i.e. Boozer) and we continue to just ride it out until eventually there is nothing left and we're forced into beggining for someone to grant us a S&T so we can get an exception. I believe Sloan's departure resulted from passivity forcing it, but that's just me. Deron became reactionary forced hand. We speak about things being set up for draft night and when camp rolls around we'll speak about how much more value Harris and Jefferson will have at the trade deadline, which will again come and pass. The only proactive moves made by the FO have been salary deals, unless you count Hart for Knight or Giricek for Korver (whether or not Sloan's feud with him forced the trade is another topic). Even regarding our free agents we take the passive approach (see CJ, Millsap, Matthews, Boozer, Korver, Marshall, etc. -- not that I'm advocating us having brought back guys like Boozer or Marshall).

I think the problem we run into is that the vast majority of the fans aren't suggesting Bell for LeBron. Most are not treating our franchise as if it were a fantasy team. Nobody's wanting a drastic change every month. However, it seems at any mention, suggestion, or question of whether or not a deal should be made and everybody gets caricaturized as being these wacky extremists and the standard response of "not going to make a deal just to make a deal" gets thrown out as if that's what the majority of fans are really wanting.

I just wish there was some indication that this franchise wasn't so passive. I wish we didn't have such a defeatist mentality when it came to improving the team. The argument that we don't see what really goes on may be true, but during KOC's tenure here very little fruit has been born that appears to have originated from being assertive on our side (the Deron Williams draft trade stands out as one of the few exceptions). For once I'd just like to see statements be made to the effect of "Well, we looked really hard. We had a few things that we thought would be pretty big for us and tremendously improved the team, but in the end we came up short. We're always actively looking to imrpove this franchise and will do what it takes to bring this franchise into serious contention for a championship while maintaining our franchise philosophy. We're confident with what we have and we're going to move forward with the future in sight." Even lipservice would be a nice gesture.

Anyone responding can feel free to pay no attention to my statements and just presume I've said "omg!!!11 tradez plz! jeffersuck 4 dwight and we resign deron!! trade everybody!"

I want to cross KOCs patience with the guy who did the fire sale in Portland. A guy who is patient but has no problem pulling that trigger if something comes up.

I think the Jazz make calls, but that the policy is to never speak of it publicly in interest of preserving the sanity of the players as much as possible. I do think the approach is more passive than most teams, however, and I don't know that that in and of itself is a weakness.

Agree, Numberica. And I'm not so sure Kevin ISN'T proactive. The Jazz are and always have been an organization that believes in stability. Success has come from having guys play a certain system and get very familiar with running options off options, curls, back cuts, P&R's, etc. That takes players building chemistry with each other. In the past 30+ years, how mnay "rebuilds" have the Jazz done: just two with the 3rd now underway. The Jazz hace looked to add pieces to what they have, not shake up the entire roster. Post-Stockton and Malone, KOC brought in Okur and Boozer to be the cornerstones (along with AK) and then made a good trade to move up and get Deron. We needed a shooter and a good FT'er to close out games. KOC got Korver.

KOC did pursue a couple of trades for AK; those were shot down. The deal for Boozer was not reactive; he was arranging that trade at the previous deadline with Kahn. Kahn ultimately decided he wanted to wait until after the season and also required an additional 1st instead of Tomic. KOC got that by trading Brewer. Miller wanted him to shed salary, he got rid of Harpring and all it took was incuding a decent, but not great, backup PG.

O'Connor is old school. He believes trade rumors should not be disclosed out of fairness to the players involved. ANd I think he demands that of other GM's. The biggest trade in the NBA last season (yes, I'd rank it ahead of Carmelo) was done without a word getting out until it was sent to the league office for approval.

I'm disappointed nothing was done. But I do believe a lot of the discussions were trades on the back end of trades. And those are tough to get done if the other ones back up against the deadline. Everyone was waiting on Dwight. It was quite a surprise when he moidified his contract. And that meant NJ was not going to do a deal with us to shave cap space for next season. We had minor chips to trade. No one really NEEDS Howard, CJ, Bell or Tinsley. I can understand not taking back longer obligations if there aren't players who will be major contributors.

K you guys can eat me alive, but from his interviews I've noticed the big thing with KOC these days is "games that matter". In other words, in his view of player development he sees it better to platoon the young guys with the vets if the vets can keep us in the playoff hunt and the cost of minutes for the youngins because then when the young guys do get minutes they're playing in crucial, "every-game-matters" scenarios. The alternative being of course Washington Wizard style youth in revolt. I do think he kiiiinda is onto something with this, though I obviously think we should play them more then we already are.

Yep, got to find the balance. I think Ty is close, just need a few more minutes for Kanter and Favors, and 15 minutes for Burks at least.

I can dig that. I never was a real proponent of tanking or all-out youth insanity, either. I just want the young players to get fair chances to play (not buried under higher-salaried vets out of that principle alone) and I want to see growth. I've gotten that for the most part. Jefferson is a bit of a road-block but I get that.
