The Las Vegas Jazz?

There is the rumor floating around that an NBA team is considering relocating to Las Vegas, and while I do not think that it is Utah (I think it is probably Sacramento), given SLC's proximity to Vegas, I think Utah should consider experimenting with playing 10 or so "home" games per year in Las Vegas. It would possibly provide an influx of cash to the team, which would allow them to more comfortably go over the salary cap and into the luxury tax. If the Jazz played part of the season in Vegas, they would expand their fan base, sell more merchandise, and the sin city fun and tax benefits (like Miami's) would possibly attract more free agents. The Jazz wouldn't be just another small market team, but instead would continue to be a small market but with a headlining city behind it as well. Plus, the dichotomy between the snow-covered suburbia of Utah and the bright lights and sin-filled streets of Vegas would be interesting and dynamic.

I wish I could set this thread on fire-- it is that bad. Relocating the Utah Jazz is like relocating the SLC temple and Vinylone from his mother's basement. Not gonna happen. /thread.

Terrible idea. I'm all for out of the box thinking, but your theory has a few holes in it. First of all, there would not be any tax breaks for players or the orginization for playing a part time schedule in Vegas. Jazz players would obviously still have to be part time Utah residents and the Jazz would obviously still operate as a Utah business, meaning, that's the tax code they would be following.

Secondly, why take away home games from the best fans in the NBA? Utah does not struggle with attendance and the Jazz would most likely alienate their loyal fan base by taking away games. Not only that, Utah would probably have to play some of their best home games in Vegas. I doubt Vegas would be excited to see Utah come to town just so they could play the T Wolves. So not only would you be taking home games away from the amazing Utah fans, you'd probably be taking away home games versus teams like the Lakers, Heat, etc. You'd also be hurting one of the best home court advantages in the entire league.

I believe the group that just bought the Warriors is an entertainment group that does a lot of booking for Vegas shows. The rumor is that it is them who are planning to relocate their team to Vegas. Sacremento can't really do it because of their ownership. The Maloffs own The Palms. The NBA would not allow them to own casinos and have a team that operates in Vegas. That's a major conflict of interest. If the Maloofs ever wanted to move the Kings to Vegas, they'd have to sell The Palms first.

If the Jazz moved to Vegas I would probably stop being an NBA fan at all. So the idea might help in attracting more revenue but I think a lot of Utahn's would be turned off by the idea and ultimately give up on the franchise. I certainly would.

The Jazz leaving Utah would be even more ugly than the Sonics leaving Seattle. I would suspect Jazz fans would disband and either pick a new team OR just say eff the NBA all together.

NO WAY THE JAZZ MOVE WHILE THE MILLER'S OWN THEM PERIOD.

They would have to be losing tons of money to even consider selling the Jazz, but the Miller's would never move them to Las Vegas. They'd sooner move them to Seattle.

I had to register just to say I am a huge Jazzfan living in vegas and even I would not want the Jazz to come here. So much entertainment to compete with, concerts, shows, gambling...even if it one of our mayors top priorities, I don't believe that we are a viable market.

UNLV fans are scarce, nothing like BYU and Utah fans, in fact I think there are more BYU fans than UNLV fans here. Nobody is actually from here, so their sports allegiances belong elsewhere. For me if another team came here I would remain a Jazz fan. The worst part is that people are starting to leave because the job market is so bad here.

Anyways they might get it done, I doubt it will be the Jazz and I think it will fail--I wouldn't worry about it.

Vegas is good for the all-star game and summer leagues, but not an NBA team. Most of the people there who would go to a game would be from another state, and unless the Jazz were playing a great team why would they want to go? And if the Jazz are playing a great team, play it in Utah.

**** Vegas. A **** hole of a city. No offense bro. That said, The Seattle Jazz sounds perfect.

This has already been done and it failed miserably. The year before LHM bought into the Jazz they did in fact play a dozen or so "home games" in Vegas. Attendance sucked and did nothing in regards to bringing in additional revenue. Thank God LHM bought into the Jazz the next year eventually buying them outright.

you must been smoking some good weed or alot of crack to come up with this ideal....i mean las vegas is a good place to host the all-star game thats about it. lets be real...unlv football team has a hard time selling out there games...and you would think they would be able to pull top notch high school players to play at unlv. even there triple a baseball team has a hard time getting people to attended the games. it's just not a true sports town but thats just me with my thoughts.

Isn't Vegas kind of dead in the water now? You can rent a nice place for 200-300/month there now - that's never a good sign in the United States of Inflation.

You must be watching CNN. I just moved from Vegas for work. While it is down its not out! 200-300 will get you a room in the ghetto. Vegas would be a great home for an NBA team, it is a true basketball town and they have the money to support it. Do I think the Jazz should go there No, but a team like the kings would do very well there.
