Jazz's 3-Point Shooting Philosophy.

But where the Spurs kill, and we wouldn't, is on the swings. The ball goes from shooter to shooter. We'd be swinging from Hayward to Devin/Earl/Tinsley. Or from Hayward to Devin/Earl/Tinsley to Carroll/Howard/Burks.

That's a lot of broken links.

.....busted out laughing on the truthfulness of that statement! No matter how wide open you get a guy, he's still got to hit a fair percentage of those shots! I think if they practiced shooting more than dunking, they could increase it by a factor of 5!

I think some other teams will more often keep that guy in the corner, and still get him the ball.
If the screener slips then the weakside shooter stays in the corner. If the PG penetrates below the top-of-the-key, the shooter rolls up for both spacing (need to clear out the left-side so his man can't pick up the screener rolling to the basket) and floor balance (someone has to be in a position to get back and protect the rim in transition).

I don't care whether the Jazz take a two pointer or a three pointer as long as it's a good shot. More importantly was how bad the spacing and off-ball movement was this year (especially in the playoffs). The problems become worse when the person through which the team runs the offense the majority of the game is a bad passer/playmaker.

Yeah, but the spacing is bad because the Jazz do not threaten from the 3. Watch the Spurs: why can Parker get in the lane and operate the P&R so well? Because they always have 2 guys parked out beyond the arc who can and will shoot the 3. Other teams have to respect that and then you get the spacing to operate inside. Against the Spurs the Jazz could not work inside AT ALL because the Spurs packed it in the middle, having zero concern about our 3 point shooting.

If the Jazz want to feature Favors/Kanter, they better get this through their heads. You gotta space the floor with shooters, lots of shooters, not just one "designated" 3 point guy like a Korver.

3 point shots matter for spacing.

The spurs offense is not about getting 3pt shots. It is about getting a layup off a pick and roll situation. THEN when the other team tries to rotate to stop that first attack, the 3pt shot is the next weapon. Kicking it out, swinging it around and finding an OPEN three point shot, and then you see them get layups off passes from 3pt shooters to cutters to the hole. It is an advanced version of Hakeem's Rockets of the 90's.

To do this is all about the skillset of Ginobili and Parker being similar and having the pick man being a complete stud in Duncan. Then they find pieces and MAKE pieces fit around that plan. Bonner is a 'find', Leonard appears to be a 'make.'

No doubt Jazz need a better offense and i'm ready for it to be centered around Favors...

Fear of the 3 pointer is also a key component. How well would Duncan do, how well would parker do in the lane if the Jazz could have packed the middle the way they did against us? Not so much. Yes, they have great talent but they use it and complement it to perfection.

The Jazz on the other hand always want to go inside but do nothing to prevent the D from collapsing by putting shooters on the floor. Instead they pick up Howards and Watson who cannot shoot and never have.

the article linked in the OP indicated that the Jazz had 5 guys shooting a collective 40% or so from corner 3s, yet those 5 took very few corner 3s.

maybe that is just selective data distortion, but it is something to take a look at, and makes me wonder if the Jazz should work to get more of those shots.
