It seems like the number of movies with a theme of hostile/threatening extra-terrestrials invading the earth has gone up dramatically. For no reason whatsoever, I'm going to list some of them here. If you want to add to the list, go ahead.

This year: The Darkest Hour, Battleship, The Avengers, Transformers, Men in Black...
Last year: Battle LA, Skyline, Cowboys & Aliens, Super8, The Thing, Green Lantern...
Recent years: District 9, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Aliens v. Predators, Invasion, War of the Worlds, Signs, XFiles, Independence Day...
Older: They Live, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 2001,

...and a litany of stupid-cheesey themed movies like Paul, Mars Attacks, etc.

Also, Prometheus is coming out soon. It seems a bit too over the top CGI for my taste, but still looks epic as hell.

Independence Day is still my favorite and the Mars Attack exploding brain scenes are classic.

Battleship looks like a Transformer Michael Bay non stop exploding crap.

What about Predator, Alien, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Superman II & Independence Day?

2001 & 2010 were not about an alien race invading earth. It was about a greater presence warning us against our evil ways. More benevolent than evil invasion.

District 9 was also not about alien invasion. Aliens came. And then like everything else we do, we ****ed it up.

It's made by Ridley Scott. One of the greatest directors of all time (who by the way, made the original Alien). Most of the sets are full scale. Is there CGI yes, but mainly only for large backdrops. Less CGi than you think. The rest no, it's quite amazing if you look at the behind the scenes stuff.

One of the greatest directors ever? Dude, really? I am about to have a cardiac just talking about this movie. RS is a very good filmmaker but he's almost as much of a ham as his freakin' younger brother.

Speaking about aliens, anyone else not a huge fan of CGI aliens? I like old-school costumes and aliens, but I understand that it may be too expensive these days for a studio to focus so much on makeup and costumes. I only like CGI as background objects/environments once in a while.

Animitronic and Puppet aliens don't work too well for moving fast. The costume aliens restrict aliens to be too humanlike. In startreck a Vulcan is basically a human with a beatles hair cutt, pointy ears, and shaved eyebrows, while klingons got some random wierd thing on their foreheads, a beard, and usually darker skin that it. Try doing the action scenes in Avatar or Disctrict 9 without cg. I think good CG is the best aliens but it has to be good.

CGI is good, but you can overuse it. I don't like Movies that are completely based in CGI, like Avatar. Distrcit 9 had a lot of natural landscapes and such.

The aliens on battleship were by far the best aliens in any movie I've seen in a last couple of years. At least appearance wise

K-Pax and The 4th Kind were actually very good movies. I enjoyed both of them 100x more than I thought I would.
