Fake ads on Craigslist and KSL.com

I have been looking to buy a bunch of stuff lately, and I've given local online classifieds a try. But it seems a lot of listing are fake? I saw a listing for a professional elliptical trainer, and I called the number provided. They asked for my address to deliver it, and then told me they'd call in the next hour to let me know they're on their way. That was that. I gave them another call later in the day, but they did not answer. The exact same thing happened with another listing I saw for a sectional.

So I looked through the ads, and it seems a lot of them are reposted over and over. Always with the same sense of urgency ("moving tomorrow, need to sell ASAP" and such). So what's the point of that? I realize it must be some kind of scam, but how exactly are they scamming people?

I'm wondering if others have had similar experiences with online classified ads.

There are **** load of scam ads on craigs. If you contact and they say anything like they're in a hurry, need payment immediately, etc .. it's 90% scam.

I've found real estate scams, dog scams, etc etc. Luckily, it's one thing I am very good at .. can spot it a mile away.

Typically most of the scams offer a product at a price that's too good to be true if not free. When you contact the seller the product is in another state or country and needs to be shipped. If you wire them the money they'll cover the shipping. Guess what, you never see the money or the product.

I've always wanted to post on KSL an ad for a slightly used fleshlight.

I've got the idea from a website, but I advertised a brand new 50" plasma tv for 150 bucks on craigslist once. Then when people would email me I told them I accidentally paused some hardcore porn on it for too long and the image is burned into the screen and you can see it when the screen goes darkish. 3 out of 4 people still wanted it.

I was once the owner of one of the biggest timeshare companies in America .. I would prefer to not swap stories ....................................................

but I could be baited.

I like your thinking.

I've heard of the people who friend people from high school on Facebook and rob them when they announce their vacations on Facebook.

One reason why you should wait to post about your vacation until you're home. Especially if you don't have your privacy settings tightened up and people beyond your friends can see that you're gone.

When my brother was job hunting he found a listing on Craigslist that was pretty generic. Part of it mentioned some sort of background check fee, so I told him to stay away from that. Legitimate companies can pay for background checks themselves.

^^ I love how flexible he is too. 18-26! You couldn't pay me to take a sexy facebook photo with an 18 year old.

Of course not. You wouldn't be the one getting paid.
