What's new

When Mo Williams is your big free agent signing.

You know your team is screwed. We cleared all that cap space. We have extra money. We have no 1 crappy 2nd round draft pick. What do we do? Sign an average point guard and trade our average point guard... I am sorry but hoping guys will turn into big time players is not a good strategy. We have money we should be out there going after guys. And Al Jeffersuck was exposed last year. The guy cannot play anything close to anything resembling defense. Is that really the plan? If so I think KOC should be fired. He is just trying to be good enough to make the playoffs and never really considers trying to compete for a title. /endrant

Uh, just don't know what to say about this, I'm speechless.

1. KOC improved two starting positions on the floor in the span of 3 days via trade. Harris + TPE > Mo Williams + Marvin Williams. I'd certainly say that's being aggressive.

2. When considering our team's improvement from last year to next year, consider that the bulk of our improvement should stem from internal sources (i.e., the improvement of "The Four").

We cleared cap space? When?

The cap space comes NEXT season when the Jazz only have FOUR players undercontract...five if Marvin Williams exercises his player option.

Let's see, we got rid of CJ, Howard and are going to amnesty Bell. Any idea how much that frees up? Enough to ensure the Jazz will be under the luxury tax threshold, but not enough to get Utah under the cap. That means the Jazz only have their exceptions (i.e. MLE and lower-level) and/or can make a trade.

Jefferson was exposed. OK, I'm with you on that one. But, shhh...we need tokeep it a secret. Otherwise other GM's might find out and will be unwilling to give us a young, future all-star or an unprotected lottery pick. Certainly Jefferson on a 1-yr contract is the building block others teams desperately want. Umm no, teams want expiring contracts so they can RID themselves of other longer-term deals that they've deemed to be a mistake. So yeah, I'm sure Orlando would love to give us Turkoglu. How about we give up Jefferson and reacquire Humphries, signing him to a long-term deal. That would allow Brooklyn to complete the trade for Dwight Howard. And damn, we missed outo n getting Joe Johnson. Could have definitely gotten him for Jefferson and others.

In terms of FA's, maybe we should have spent $8M/per on Asik. How about Lin for4/$28M?

Jazz MIGHT have up to $20M to spend next summer. And that would be after Millsap re-signs at $10M or so, IINM. Now some of that could disappear if Marvin opts in. And most would disappear if we traded Jefferson for longer-term salaries. Few may want to hear this, but the best solution - if we can't get back expirings in return - may be to just let Al's contract expire. That frees up the most space financially, and might allow the Jazz to pick up one or two FA's next summer who want more than just the MLE. The way teams are spending this year, most teams may have just their exceptions to spend, and may hesitate because of the punitive tax penalty taking effect in 2013.

I think KOC deserves a golf clap for the moves. They weren't earth shattering, but he improved the team while still preserving about $35 million in cap space for next season.

Still hoping we could deal Jefferson. Houston or Portland could be a potential partner if they dont get whom they want at center. Just wish Houston had a young PG to put in the trade.

I like the moves that have been made thus far. Oh, and the off-season is nowhere near over with, so stay tuned.

Are they ever? It's hard to make big moves when no FA wants to come here.

Jazz are building wisely. Seeing which young players rise to the top this season and having a glut of veterans on expiring contracts, who will play their butts off for new ones.

Mo Williams + Marvin Williams for Devin Harris + TPE is a good deal. KOC taking advantage of teams in transition to make worthwhile moves.

Jazz are probably still looking at trade opportunities that involve Millsap/Jefferson.

Jazz could be a player in free agency next year and likely have 2 picks in next year's draft.

Mo Williams/Tinsley
Hayward/Burks/Murphy
Marvin Williams/Hayward
Favors/Millsap
Jefferson/Kanter

....is a .600 team (48 or 49 wins). To get to the next level will require a go-to scorer on the wing and one of our young bigs to emerge as an 18-pt. scorer. It's up to Burks or a free agent to be that wing player.
