If candidate X who is running for leader of the free world got in front of a microphone and said out loud that there is nothing he can do for half the people in the country - am I the only one who finds this deeply disturbing?

He never said there's nothing he can do for half the country. He said there no use spending money trying to convince half the country to vote for him. BIG difference!

It's readily obvious that this is not about a difference of politiical opinion; hell, I would bet you about half the people he's referring to here vote Republican.

This about a presidential candidate passing judgment on half the people in this country in an extremely dark and cynical light.

Edit: is the 47% figure those who do not pay taxes? Does that include those gaming the self employment tax exemptions and low income workers (such as single mothers working as waitresses) that get all the taxes they paid back?

Yes, it includes low-income people (who still pay federal payroll taxes, state income/sales tax, property tax, etc., just not federal income tax). It also includes a vary large portion of the seniors, who get by on just Social Security.

Though I'm guessing that you Utahans have the luxury of not hearing a campaign ad every 10 seconds as opposed to living in Colorado.

And btw, I'm still waiting for someone to answer my questions on trickle down economics. If we can't find examples on how they've worked or are working, then we should probably stop framing our whole tax structure around it. Like fast too, before the middle-class disappears completely.

Yes, it includes low-income people (who still pay federal payroll taxes, state income/sales tax, property tax, etc., just not federal income tax). It also includes a vary large portion of the seniors, who get by on just Social Security.

You are correct that taxes are not owed by seniors on Social Secuirty as long as their total income falls within certain limits.

One group that annoys me is the self emplyment group that claim literally everything as a deduction and then show that they made no money when they cleared 150k before their house payments, cell phone, car, insurance, health insurance...

No one has close to even addressing my original question.

Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were two completely different people, they were both flawed individuals; but at the very least they both had a plan for the American people - a set of core values that they felt were broadly appealing and that, if applied, would make everybody's life better.

What Romney is saying is a dark and twisted turn that I've never heard from a presidential candidate. Even if what he said has some validity to it, if this is somthing he actually believes, I can't get just my mind around how this guy managed to get to this point and, more importantly, why he is running for president in the first place.

It wasn't president Obama who kicked me out of bed this morning. Clinton never woke me up for a 7:30 college class or held my hand while I worked till 1 am. Bush never reviewed my resume or let me use him as a job refrence, and when I got laid off after 911 he never called to tell me how sorry he was. Bush Sr. didn't come to my High School graduation, or fill in as a father figure when dad left us high and dry. Regan played no part in me getting my first job at age 8 so I could buy shoes for school. Carter didn't teach me to read or feed me. And Ford was didn't pull me out or diaper me. So just what in the hell do you expect from a president. He ain't your father or your mother and the only way a president or any other politician can 'give' you something is if he first takes it from somebody else.
