Legal Pot

This is what I think. I can have a beer or two and drive fine (I dont, EVER, but I could). Put more into me than that and my driving ability starts to suffer.

GVC might be able to smoke a joint and drive fantastically, great. But if he keeps putting it down at some point he starts to get affected and should not drive.

There need to be laws that reflect that.

This was kind of my point: People who drive just fine while high shouldn't care if there are dui laws or not because since they drive just fine while high they would not get pulled over and therefore would never get "caught" anyway.

Kind of hard to protect without ramifications/remedies for putting people in harm's way.

I don't disagree. But, more and more, the public discourse on the role of govt is limited to this one function. Govt is doing more than that, and needs to.

I agree with salty about having less government control: I dont feel i should get punished if i dont shovel my sidewalks in winter. I dont think i should be punished for not wearing a seatbelt if i dont want to. I think i should be able to buy a large coca cola if i want to. I have heard of some little town that has, or is trying to, make it illegal to swear in public. If someone wants to put a cross on the side of the freeway to mourn a dead person, then i dont see what the big deal is. If someone wants to use the word "god" in the pledge of allegiance in school, then who cares.

I think one of the biggest problems with our country is that people get offended or upset WAY too easily. Alot of people think we need more rules/laws so that no one can do anything that might offend someone.
At my company we have annual training about what is considered "harrassment". In these classes they teach how to not do anything offensive and they talk about how language, and emails and such need to be very vanilla.
I wish they would teach annual classes teaching people how to not get offended so easily. People need to learn to just get over stuff and have thicker skin.

Sorry for getting so off topic, now back on topic: Legalize it!

If people would just mind their own business, most of this wouldn't be an issue.

A lot of people want to force everyone else to live like them. If everyone just lived their life, and let everyone else live life however they wanted, marijuana would have never been illegal in the first place.

I am 100% for doing your own thing. If it was a FACT that smoking and driving was no more dangerous for others on the road than driving completely sober, then I have NO problem with it. I'm just not convinced. I have no problem with wacky weed, itself.

EDIT: And with all due respecft, Salty, your links don't make me feel any better .. I imagine there are twice as many studies that suggest the opposite as true.

Genius, the way to the Utopia we all have been dreaming of. Ignore everything going on around you and let people do whatever they want... just live your life man. This is also a great guide to parenting, don't force kids to do anything, just let them do whatever they want. That is true freedom, and would make for a great society. Point the way Salty, I'm moving there with you.

So I assume this post is sarcastic. If it is, then I'm left thinking you believe the role of government is to be a "parent" to everyone. Or that, at the very least, government's role should mimic that of a parent's.

I'm all for letting adults be adults. But only a fool would let their kids do whatever they wanted with no restrictions.

I believe Salty is addressing people that turn others in for things because they have nothing better to do.
Most of the time it's Jane Welfare, and Joe Disability.

Actually that was never supposed to be a guide to parenting, I believe it was the main use of the Constitution.
Basically under the U.S. Constitution, as long as you don't hurt anyone else or defame anyone elses property, you can do with your life what you like.

This so-called true freedom is exactly what our forefathers envisioned when the wrote the document, and that was what America was supposed to be to this day.
Except the people let let Neo-conservatives, socialists, and fascists take control.

I agree with alot of this. Marry who you want (not immediate family), live where you want..

Govermnet, for the most part, needs to just let us live. However I do believe that there do need to be some laws that tie us together as a nation.

I agree for the most part with everything you say here except the shoveling the sidewalk. It is a public walkway that you agreed to maintain when you bought your house. Not shoveling it affects everybody that uses the sidewalk. Now the walk to your front door, who cares? The public sidewalk however should be dealt with in a timely manner.

Well, you can't print your own money, or nay of dozens of other things. In fact, the Constitution was a strengthening of federal power, compared to the Ariticles of Confederation, because just leting states do what they wanted wasn't working.

If the cross is on provate property, I agree with you. How would you feel about the government putting up crescents on public land to mourn dead officers, particularly when many of those officers were not Muslim?

None of the families of fallen officers complained about the crosses to memorialize their loved ones.

Is your assertation the some of the officers who were slain non christian? Link?

Edit: As for the Muslim question. If the officer was a Muslim then i would be fine with it. We are honoring that person and Muslim would be a big part of who he was.

Totally agreed. If nobody complained, this should have been a non issue. If someone complains, then take appropriate action at that time.

Wait! Stop the presses! The S&S Express agrees with Salty on an issue. Someone call those damn record book people.
