Fouling

Last night I heard Harpring, who was at least assistant coached by Ty Corbin, repeatedly comment on the Lakers defense by saying it was poor because they weren't fouling.

Likewise, he was commenting that we were playing great defense, after we gave up 46(!) freethrows.


Is this really what the coaching staff feels is good defense? Or is Harpring just a crazy former player who thinks he knows what he is talking about?

If this is what is being taught to our guys it is a scary thought, through five games we've already given up 27 more fta than we've shot. Is this a trend being led by the coaching staff? Or is it our guys being careless?

It's probably a trend being taught by the staff and our guys are being careless. Oh well. At least Al doesn't get to the line.

Better to foul than to give up a layup. Even better to keep them out of the paint entirely.

Lakers had 46 free throw attempts to the Jazz's 18. This to me is a bigger problem in the NBA than flopping. The Jazz were the home team and the officials gave the Lakers every opportunity to get back into this game. I was at the game last night and I would say 1/2 of the fouls were not even fouls called against the Jazz. The officiating last night was terrible. Al Jefferson stripped Dwight Howard 3 times cleanly and was called for a foul every time. You cannot even get within 2 feet of Kobe Bryant and they call a foul, while on the other end Metta World Peace can assault a Jazz player and no call is made. I know this has always been this way, but it was ridiculous last night. The Jazz would have beat the Lakers by 20 + if it were not for the officials. At one point Kobe Bryant had like 10 or 12 points and had not made a basket, they were all free throws. It was hard to watch because the Jazz dominated the Lakers last night and the score does not reflect it.

Any team with Howard is going to get more FT's, because teams will purposely send him to the line a lot, which means we get into the penalty faster, resulting for more FT's on the other end. I felt like the refs weren't calling a lot of body contact last night (which we were getting against the Lakers), but were calling on reach in's (which we tend to do a lot of ).

Ya the lakers were doing a lot more getting out of the way than fouling. Thats why they lost. I didnt think the refs were out to get us.
