Millsap - Afflalo trade

I posted this in a thread a week+ ago, but the thread was fizzling out, so it didn't generate enough discussion. Now, I know the forum opinion on Millsap is at an all-time low, but put you big-boy pants on, realize he's our most skilled player at all facets, and then evaluate this idea. If you're a Millsap hater, perhaps you might decide not to participate.

Who here would deal Millsap + a lottery-protected first + a second rounder for Afflalo? How realistic is this?

This helps the Magic rebuild, and we move Millsap for a player entering his prime, locked into a reasonable contract.

Hayward-Burks-Afflalo is a pretty nice.

No. And I've always loved AA. Very well-rounded. That's simply too much for a guy who is probably just a 4th option on a title team.

This.

Millsap for Afflalo straight up should be more than enough. If not then a 2nd would maybe be acceptable. But no way is AA worth Millsap and a 1st. And I'm not exactly Millsap's biggest fan.

Not to mention this isn't happening. Why would they trade him for a guy who isn't playing well? For a guy who would simply take time away from a young frontline in Vucevic, Nicholson, and Harkless.

Now, Burks and Millsap may work but I doubt they would even do that. It just doesn't make sense based on how their roster is constructed.

1. I started the offer high.

2. No way the Magic aren't interested in expirings + pick(s).

Yeah, that price is steep. I like the guy, but he's not a star, and it's like adding another Hayward. Realistically, the Jazz need to realize that Al or Sap, being expirings, aren't going to bring back a prize. But either one packaged with Hayward could bring back a piece they can really build around. Like, a wild example might be Lin. But somebody that adds a dimension we need with upside.

Ok, "steep" I'll buy. Take a pick away.

But "lateral" I won't buy, since moving equal talent to any other position would be great. In fact that is exactly what this trade attempts to do.

Again, it doesn't make sense based on their team's make-up. They probably like their SG (AA) and C (Vucevic) most of all and probably want to see what they have in their 4, Nicholson. To then trade their surest thing at the 2 is stupid. To trade it for a 4 when they already have a rookie one they want to check out is even dumber. Especially since Millsap could walk and those picks that you mention giving them are far from sure things. It would probably just be a step back. Even if it's lateral, if you're Orlando, what's the point of moving a step back to move a step forward? AA is a legit starter in this league. They know that. They need to build around him. They probably want a 3 or 1 most of all. If they could get Burke or Poythress, they're starting to build something there.

I doubt Orlando would offer Afflalo - he's a quality starting 2 with a very reasonable contract.

They'd probably try to pawn off Harrington or Redick.

The deal I would try to cook up is a 3 way that sends Pau to Houston, Sap/Hayward to LA, and Lin to us. I like AA, but he's redundant to what we have, and not an upper echelon player at his position.

Lin's young, starting there and they're playing very good ball. Why would they trade him for an older, oft-injured, and possibly soon-to-be-retiring Pau Gasol? Try harder.

With regards to the OP, where's Foye going? Even with Foye gone, you realize this makes Burks' path all but impossible, right? And I'm not sending picks and Sap to get a good player on a great team forced to produce more than he should on a bad team.

AA is old enough and he's just helping keep them a middling team while they're trying to rebuild. By the time they're ready for noise, he'll be much less effective. This duration is equal to or longer than his current deal. (Sound familiar?)

Millsap is acquired as a contract as much if not more than a player. This is why I threw two picks out there. An expiring plus a couple picks makes this a good deal for them. Maybe too good. Fine.

He needn't take minutes from one of their projects; not all coaches are as stupid as Ty.

And what exactly is the composition of that team? What will it be? If you're confident of the answers to these questions, then the Orlando Magic front office would appreciate your call.

Afflalo is a lesser talent to Millsap. Hayward rates better than Afflalo.

The Rockets had been going hard after Gasol this offseason. Thought they even had a deal at one point but don't remember what happened to it. I think there's definite interest there and Gasol is a better fit for them than Lin with the Harden in the stable.

Afflalo is just 27. He's played under 10,000 minutes in his career as compared to say Kobe who's played over 43,000. To even suggest that he is or will soon be old and wearing down, which is essentially what you're saying, is just dumb.

Again, this deal makes zero sense for them. He's their best player. They're trying to build something there while simultaneously stripping themselves of bad contracts of guys who aren't in their future plans. To strip themselves of their best player (on a very solid contract as candrew noted) is dumb, end of story.
