What's new

AK Idea

So I've been trying to think outside the box and I came up with a possible answer. It is not a likely answer, but it sure sounds better than some of these other ideas.

We pull in AK and we say, we would really love to have you on our team, but your contract is killing us. We will either try to trade you sometime this year or you can rip up your contract and sign either a 3 year 27M, 4 year 32M, or 5 year 35M contract. This new contract would start this season, obviously.

Would he do it, I have no idea. But wouldn't it be worth finding out and getting to keep him? OK, now you can rip my idea to shreds. Just thought I would throw it out there. I for one would love to keep him and he has said before that he would like to stay here. So lets make it happen without having to pay him so much!

Can't terminate contracts. And would anybody really want AK locked into 5 more years with Jazz?

Yes, you can terminate a contract, however, the Jazz would be expected to pay 100% of the contract. Additionally, both the old contract and the new contract would count towards the luxury tax.

What?

You can buyout a contract. It happens all the time. Virtually no one agrees to be bought out for much less than their remaining salary.

The OP's scenario will not happen.

Fisher was bought out for $0. The buyout amount counts against the cap.

And FWIW, AK proposed this as a solution for him getting out of Utah before the '07-'08 season and Larry in his infinite wisdom wouldn't acquiesce (sp?).

But it's not and wouldn't happen now.

I don't think he would do it. He can get his huge salary this year and still get a contract like you are suggesting at the end of the year.
