Jazz Practice Report 9-30- Possible starting lineup?

Through the first few days of practice the Jazz have been running a good deal of Deron Williams, Gordon Hayward, CJ Miles, Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson together as a unit.

Two items about this are newsworthy. With the injury to Memo Okur and the acquisition of Al Jefferson I had wondered if Jerry Sloan would have tried to use Francisco Elson or Kyrylo Fesenko as a starting center to bridge the gap. Instead, Coach Sloan has sent the message to Millsap that the position is his and he believes he is ready to take over.

This also may be a sign of the uncertainty to when and how Memo Okur is going to be able to return to the playing floor.

The final impact of this line-up is how Andrei Kirilenko could be used. As the first person off the bench AK could replace either of the bigs or either of the wings playing the 3 or the 4. Some of Andrei best times on the floor have been as a power forward.

Something Deron Williams is a fan of Deron. “AK has played well, he is in this 10th year with the offense, looks like he is in great shape and has been playing a lot of 4 which I think is his best position.”

There are some advantages to having AK at the 4. He is able to be a much more active help defender on the defensive end, while on the offensive end able to be an active slasher to the basket. His elite passing skills also get more accentuated in the Jazz system from the high post 4 spot. AK’s three point shooting doesn’t put any fear in most opponents, but when he is a 31% three pointer shooter from the 4 spot it is more palatable than from the 3.

Certain match-ups will be too difficult for AK to play the 4 spot, however many teams now are playing with a smaller 4 spot and many of them are coming off the bench. Phoenix will be small all year with
Hedo Turk0glu at the 4, Dallas will play Shaun Marion, ALHarrington will get some run in Denver, Jeff Green in OKC, and Lamar Odom in LA, are all match-ups Kirilenko can handle.

In other news from practice: Al Jefferson continues to learn the ropes and is working his way into the shape he needs to be into. Jefferson went to Santa Barbara to the Jazz training coaches for a week and got into town early so he was in good condition, but this system asks a lot more out of him than what he has been asked for in the past.

I was surprised on Wednesday how solid Jeremy Evans 15 footer jumper looked in shooting drills. He release is high, his rotation is true and he made a good percentage. It was quickly pointed out to me by people with more knowledge that lets see if he can hold all those things together with everyone else around him at full speed before we decide he is a good mid range shooter.

Hmm it looks like we may be starting Deron, Miles, Hayward, Millsap and Jefferson. That would really surprise me. I would have expected Deron, Miles, AK, Millsap and Jefferson or Deron, Bell, Miles, Millsap and Jefferson.

Deron--------Earl
Miles---------Bell
Hayward----Evans
Millsap-------AK
Jeffferson----Fes? Elson? Memo?

I think it might just be that it's easier for Jefferson and Hayward to learn the system if they are playing with guys like Deron, CJ, and Millsap who have been here for a while.

Sloan is not going to start the rookie over bell. No way unless bell is injured. This is practice people. Like someone said its easier for those 2 to learn the system playing with dwill and also bell and ak on other team makes for a good defensive team. Its just a pick up game. When dwill was at illinois they used to put dwill and augustine with some backups and play against dee and luther but guess what come game day best players are playing period

Deron--------Earl
Miles---------Bell
Hayward----Evans
Millsap-------AK
Jeffferson----Fes? Elson? Memo?

I certainly would not put Evans in there. Depending on the team we might go with a 3 man rotation at the wings or a 3 man rotation at the 4/5. However, if Evans really does play that would be another great sign for the Jazz's future.

I don't think the starting lineup is set and it may change during the season depending on matchups and injuries. The best thing about this roster is the flexibility especially when Memo comes back. I think putting Hayward with Deron and CJ, Millsap and Jefferson protects him offensively. I really like the second unit with Watson, Bell, SF (Hayward/CJ/Evans), AK and Fess/Memo. This might be the best second unit the Jazz have had. Until Memo comes back Sloan probable feels he needs Bells shooting and leadership on the floor. AK will be happy because he gets some touches. Whatever happens Sloan is going to have flexibility and a challenge to keep everyone happy especially if Evans/Hayward/Thompson are better than advertised. Heaven forbid if Fess makes a huge leap!!!

I would be fine with that on opening day. Hayward is actually a very good play maker; totally a team guy. This is a very good offensive unit, but notsure how they'll be defensively.
That 2nd unit would be very aggresive defensively; Wow!!
This may be 'the plan'; get off to a good start offensively, then clamp down defensively with that nasty 2nd unit. Remember; a lot of the time the defense has it's biggest problems because of poor shot selections offensively. IOW, if you play smart offense, you don't look near as bad when you go back on defense...

I think it might just be that it's easier for Jefferson and Hayward to learn the system if they are playing with guys like Deron, CJ, and Millsap who have been here for a while.
That's exactly what I thought. Raja and AK know the system pretty well. Big Al and Hayward need to know how it runs. Millsap and CJ need to play with Deron to figure out how they'll play with the main starters (absent AK).

Hayward already the teachers pet....big shocker. *rolls eyes*

I don't know about that. It could be similar to CJ's starting position two seasons ago--8/9 minutes in the 1st and 3rd. Bell probably replaces him with CJ sliding to the 3 while AK plays 4 for a few minutes. AK then probably plays through to the half, CJ sits for 8/10 minutes of the late 1st/2nd, then comes in for Bell and CJ and AK close the halves at the wings. But it's all just speculation at this point.
