10/01 Jazz Practice Notes

yea that's why i said "an improved Fes" will help... Millsap is just too small against the Lakers and Boston... he will be just fine against the rest of the league.

Millsap struggled two years ago. Paul played well this last year. However Boozer struggled.

So it's pretty safe to say that Fesenko will be a member of Portland Trail Blazers next season.

Unfortunately, we won't even have the option of matching. By playing for his QO, he becomes an UFA. It will be like Raja; KOC will tell Fes to go out and shop the market and he'll probably sign with Portland or Houston without ever getting back to O'Connor.

If Ante Tomic was not in the picture the Jazz would have offered him a multi year deal. Thats the only sense I could make of it. Despite a poor worlds showing, KOC probably still sees Tomic as the future Jazz center.

Who says KOC didn't. I imagine they tried to lock him up cheap, like $4M/2years. But Fegan is smart. He knows that if Fes has any kind of a decent season, he'll be offered a 4-5 year at $4-$5M/per. Just look at some of the deals that teams have given marginal bigs. I know there will be a new CBA, but 5's will ALWAYS be overpaid.

You might want to think about doing your research before posting. Ante Tomic recently signed a multi-year deal with Real Madrid.

The Jazz may or may not be undervaluing Fesenko, but they didn't sign fes for only one year to make room for Tomic (which might be Croatian for "Toothpick").

The one-year minimum deal was first and foremost about finances, not wanting to pay any more than they had to for their backup centers, even if it meant losing Fes or having to pay extra for him next year. There was probably an offer for several years at the QO value of just over $1 million, plus perhaps raises, but that was probably considered a lowball offer by Dan Fegan and his posse, who likely wanted multiple millions for multiple years.

If Fes does have a good year, I think the Jazz would be willing to offer him good $$$, simply because they would be offering Kirilenko less on his new contract.
Also, isn't Okur's contract up next year?

if you read that artical closer it says the earliest he can come to utah is the summer of 2011 if both teams inclined.

Is Tomic really an NBA center prospect? He seems to be a Nowitski/Gasol type player. A tweener SF/PF prospect.

Definitely. Tomic will see time at the 3 as a 7' 2" player, as seen with Gasol and Nowitski.

Well, we do know Fes doesn't like to move. So there's hope of resigning him if he has a good year.

The bottom line is Fes isn't getting anything more than the MLE no matter how good he does this year. That's a contract we could match (or exceed) as a free agent. I doubt he'd ever get it, but the Jazz do still hold the cards in that limited sense. And if they concluded Fes had more potential than Tomic, they would have Tomic as a trade chip. This situation isn't really that bleak. Long point short: the better Fes is, the more options we have to do good things for the team even if that means losing Fes.

If there is a team that is under the cap, they can offer him a contract in the $6M to $7M range. If Fegan and Fes don't bother to let the Jazz match, they can just take someone's (like Houston) MLE and be gone. Of course, that's assuming the no major changes to the current CBA.
