Paul Pierce?

Explain why a hall of famer like Pierce would want to end his career with a joke of franchise like the Jazz?

The Celtics tried to trade him straight up for the pick that became Damian Lillard a year and a half ago, when the Nets were terrible nonethless. He doesn't have a choice if Boston wants to trade him, and if Garnett retires and they trade Pierce, they'll have some cap room for a quick rebuild around Green and Rondo.

Sure, the Celtics could trade Pierce to the Jazz (against his wishes), but what would stop him from simply retiring and never suiting up for the Jazz? I could easily see that happening. Karl Malone left the Jazz for the Lakers at the end of his career with the hopes of getting a ring...what could Pierce hope to gain while ending his career for a small minded/conservative franchise with an idiot head coach. Absolutely no upside from the Truth's standpoint...

This is EXACTLY the type of trade the Jazz are hoping for.

Probably wont happen, but if it was offered, the Jazz would say yes in a heartbeat.

PG
Hayward
Pierce
Favors
Kanter

That's a good team.

My logic here is that if Garnett retires, they're going into a mini-rebuild. You could try and sell Pierce that he's going to be "the guy" here and that we were that close to making the playoffs this year and he's the missing link to at least returning to the postseason. I don't think the Celtics will get many offers for him, we're one of the only semi-competitive teams (besides like Atlanta) that has the space to take him for little in return. If he's not worth a draft pick to the Nets, he can't have great value league-wide, especially at 15 Million.

If this were three years ago I'd be all for this, but he is the Al Jefferson of wings he would stop ball movement as he needs the ball in his hands, hell he plays a similar game to Al, and as he gets older, and he's sure to lose more foot speed next year he will do more post up and shoot an even lower % 15 footer then Al as he struggles to get of his fadeaway as he gets even older next year. The two players that I see needing the ball next year for us to be succesfull are Hayward and Kanter, and with Paul's style of isolation play Hayward and Kanter will struggle.

I just don't see what trading for Pierce accomplishes for the jazz he's not going to make us a contender.

Why? He won't win the Jazz a championship and he would get major minutes over the youth. Bad idea.

Exactly! No more of this patching while we develop younger talent. I want us to do a true rebuild. Collect young talent that can grow together and then bring in veterans in about 2 years.

Let's see:

Jack / Schroeder / Burks
Hayward / Burks / Webster
Pierce / Carroll / Webster / Adonis Thomas
Kanter / Landry / Evans
Favors / Gobert

Should at least be a top 5 team in the West.

You've pointed out though that the Jazz should possibly hold onto their cap space to see what the free agent-chasing teams are willing to offer us to help them clear salary. Same goes for looking at sign-and-trade opportunities with Jefferson. My guess is that a few teams who don't have much space will want Al.
Agree. If Boston were to clear Pierce off the books in order to get Howard, that probably puts them back into the playoffs. Is an expiring player plus a pick in the 20's worth absorbing that much salary? I don't see that as good value. Besides, we need players with upside. We're not making a push for a championship. I'd rather see Hayward and Burks "closing" even if they miss more than make. If they succeed, they're gaining experience and confidence for the future; if they fail, Jazz will move up in the draft and be in line for a better pick.

Don't you put some value in the Championship-attitude that Pierce would bring to our team? I mean, who better to have than someone who NEVER quits to instill that kind of attitude in our young guys. I think that's worth it alone, we need to get nasty like Boston/Chicago have been the past few years. I'm sure you could still finish games with a Burks-Hayward-Pierce line too, although our idiot coach probably wouldn't.

Also, for anyone who is worried about young guys getting the shaft in minutes, member that Pierce is old and will be on a minutes limit during the regular season.

Alright you ********, I've found an actual rumor about this:

https://www.celticsblog.com/2013/5/...is-plan-a-for-celtics-al-jefferson-is-another

Millsap for Pierce on a sign and trade? What say ye?

I say sure, as long as Hayward starts at SG, and Pierce is on a minutes limit until the playoffs. Pierce IS "The Truth," still. What he would bring to the young guys mentality is invaluable, but is it as invaluable as ACTUAL playing time? (That part, unfortunately, is under Corbin's control).

I think we have to ask ourselves if the Jazz could actually be bad enough to make anything of the 2014 draft, and if they're not, shouldn't we teach our young guys how to win, since THEY will be our future? If the youngin's get to play a lot, and we have Pierce in the locker room, I think the positive future impact would be a lot more than any #15 pick in the '14 draft could bring us.

From how I see it, the '14 draft will be amazing for picks 1-5, really good for 5-10, and then just any old draft from there on. With half a league more desperate than us, with cultures that are used to tanking, what makes us think we could crack the ultra-coveted top 10 of next years draft?
