Charge him high so he pleads down to what he should be punished for. Also think the league needs to be held liable and disbanded, especially hearing about prior assaults at these games. The teenager is being charged with homicide by assault, with the district attorney looking to try him as an adult.

Or it means he won't really have learned his lesson. Or it means he's already broken and will just spend more time on the streets being a threat to public safety than he otherwise wouldAnd that's it right there. If we put this kid who lost his temper, like a kid, in the adult system we are essentially guaranteeing ourselves that upon his release he'll be useless as a productive member of society and will almost certainly turn to crime and do even more harm to society. Forgetting about the kid for a minute, that's not a good deal for the rest of us.
Let this kid deal with this through the juvenile system. It might be light on destructive vengeance according to some of your tastes, but it provides for the possibility that this kid won't turn into an adult who's only contribution to society is more crime and violence.
If a bad ref, then he should have been dismissed by the league. That would have happened in other organizations such as AYSO. There is simply no excuse for violence. I don't care if it had been the worst call in the history of soccer. You do NOT assault a ref. You don't swear at him, spit on him, chest bump him, push him...and you certainly don't HIT him - in the face or anywhere else. The league has to go. And what ARE they doing? Holding a benefit soccer tournament/ OK, pass the hat around. But a soccer tournament when the guy was KILLED at a soccer game? Sorry, I just see that as being ill-timed and crass. In the story his daughter claimed he has been beat up before and has his legs and ribs broken. I am starting to think this is partially the leagues fault. I think the kid should be punished but whoever is running this league should be punished as well if it is common place to have your ref beat up. Either that or this ref has a big mouth and is saying offensive things to people but I would guess this league is out of control and fights and other issues are common place.
