Bad Defense

Locke's analysis of how sucky the Jazz defense probably explains a few things for the loser of a season just concluded. Given his numbers I'm amazed the Jazz even finished above .500. I know Ty can't play for the lads, but it is a bit of an indictment on his coaching.

I was shocked at just how bad Mo was defensively. He didn't give half a **** out there most of the time. With him and Randy starting in the backcourt and Al starting at center, I'm amazed the Jazz weren't even worse defensively.

And they loved Sap/Al, despite the obvious long term defensive weakness there. Worst defensive big tandem in the league? Could be.

This is an ongoing issue for the Jazz and has followed Ty after Ole Jer. They give lip service to defense but always play bigs who give them the old low post stock-malone game, regardless of defensive suckiness.

Nice understatement. Fortunately for us, defense does not matter. Well, it does not matter if you are okay with mediocrity.

It is time to see if our good defensive units can learn to score just enough to win. See Pacers and Grizzles for inspiration.

I would fast forward through the times these lineups were playing, until they had Hayward in the starting lineup at the end of the season. Those 4 guys were so terrible defensively.

If only we had athletic wings who might have been able to play better defense since Mo, Randy, and Marvin couldn't defend a chair....

If only we had good physical defenders down low who were willing to help on the p&r, block shots, and otherwise protect the basket since Paul and Al refused to do so...

If only if only. I blame KOC for not giving Corbin the players who could play defense......

Btw, wasn't Corbin supposed to bring a newer and better defensive philosophy? Judging by the results, I would take Jerry's philosophy anyday over whatever the hell Corbin has been trying to accomplish...

Yet another epic fail which Corbin apologists refuse to address.

We have thee worst coach in the entire league.

I'm a huge believer in your defense is a direct reflection of the coach. A coach can't make the shots for you but he can sure as hell get you to buy into getting low in your stance, get your arms up, help, and EFFORT. Yes, it's an indictment.

a testament to millsap and marvin williams defense :).

and also a testament to how awesome the bench was

This plus a 100!

I can't tell you how many times this past year the bench brought us back only to have the starters give it away once TY put them back in the game. Two games off the top of my head that I was at were against the Clippers. And both times we had double digit leads mid way through the fourth, only to have it handed back to LA by the starters.

Frustration at it's finest...

I seem to recall a couple of DLeagers passing through and not getting a minute PT between the two of them. I bet they would have at least played hard on the defensive side of the ball.

I'd extend that to the team leadership in general. The 3 leaders of the team this season were Corbin, Mo and Al (at least by virtue of their respective roles). That 3-headed monster guarantees you a team with no defensive pride or intensity. Hopefully Favors and Hayward can step up to the plate and do the job those 3 couldn't.
