What's new

So I want to talk about the Mormons

1- 13. Within the realm of several professional authors.
14 - 30. Standard religious stuff
31. Standard business model
32. - 33. Standard religious stuff

Relly, it's not very impressive.

What authors had only 3 years of education?

I went to high school in northern Mississippi and I can assure you from first hand experience that they are very noticed and very hated by some. My experience showed me it was far more intense outside Utah than in it.

Since when do you believe that Mormons have some fort of insight on the persecution faced by Mormons? Maybe if you just dropped the name "Mormon", and called yourself "Christian", everything would better, and you wouldn't face so much persecution. [/sarcasm]

The facts refute any intimation that Joseph Smith was a "skilled con man". In every instance he showed himself inept in matters of finance, and he spent his life trying to pay creditors who had secured judgments against him. He never came out on "top" financially in anything he ever did.

Why do you feel the latter refutes the former? Are the skills needed to be a good con man essentially the same skills as those needed to competently manage finances?

The LDS church has ccome out and said that the name "Mormon" is not their name. You also have a valid point. Glad to see your are finally learning.

Also the victims always have insights on the persecution. I am just not naive enough to think that they are the only ones that have any insight.

Professional education improves the quality of your writing, but I don't think it's needed for volume or story-telling.

It is needed for spelling, punctuation and quality. Are you implying that the Book of Mormon could be written, as is, by a 2nd grader?

Non-mormons playing the victim card? Classic!

You pretending that non-Mormons are not marginalized in utah is no better than non-mormons pretending there was/is not persecution there as well.

Mormons do not have a monopoly on being the victim. Works both ways.

I love Utah, but some Mormons in positions of power (the entire state govt.) look down on me and my values. It's hard, it makes me angry, and I don't like it.

FWIW, and you probably won't understand this, but I'm active mormon, live in utah, and I feel the same. I would only add that in my experience it is not just Mormons in positions of power who look down on others.

I thought it was widely speculated that Joseph Smith was a puppet and the BoM was written by the Freemasons.

Wow, I thought I was pretty well versed in the Joesph Smith & BoM alternative explanations (aka 'anti-mormon' for the LDS crowd), but I never heard that one before.

Its actually a brillant accuasation. Because unlike the Spaulding Manuscript theory, or the Rigdeon theory which has been open for study and can be checked against historical data, this theory can limp along on the secretivness of the Masons. So now I have all kinds of questions about it: When did the Masons contact him? How did he get selected? Why him? What was his motivation--reward or avoiding punishment? Did the masons pay him? Why then was he always poor? Why didn't the Masons with thier vast connections intervien in his early troubles in NY, Ohio, Missouri? Why if they had turned against him that early did it take them 15 years to kill him? Why did the Masons want to do it? Who actually wrote it? How did Joesph get the transcript from the Masons and then convince 6-20 people living in the same house as he was that he was translating from plates? If the Masons had set him up they must have some contact with him, why didn't Joesph's mother ever hint, suggest, or outright expose the Masons when she wrote a history of Joseph after he was dead? Or is it supposed that all the secrete meetings and exchanges happened without her knowledge? I see that latter you posted that it was established that Hyrum was a Mason at the time the BoM was created. Who established that? What proof or evidience is there? It still doesn't explain who wrote it and who gave it to Hyrum and why? I'm sure there is someone who wrote a book or is doing speaking tours about this and making good on it.

Wow, the more I think about it, and knowing somewhat how the evangelicals feel about Masonry this is the perfect theory to scare the hell out of any of them who might be tempted to think about the Book of Mormon, nevermind that it has no basis and can withstand far less scrutiny than what Mormons suggest. Genius.

In my opinion this is the single biggest flaw of the Church in Utah. To many members are getting a feeling of superiority. Goes agaisnt everything the Church stands for.

Anybody want to explain?

I don't know why this particular criticism bothers me so. I had a bad experience with someone many years ago with such a list, and I am still upset recalling it, and how disingenious he had been. I'm not saying you are disingenious, but would you do a small task to make sure you are asking a real question.

Take your list, then go back to your BoM. As you read the BoM and one of your list comes up, ask yourself if the context is one where the plant/animal is being described in the present context if so, is the story still in Jerusalem or the Journey through the wilderness before they enter the ship? If "yes" scratch the animal/plant from the list.

Next, check to see if the plant/animal is being used as part of a quotation from Isaiah, or other prophet who lived in the old world and is being quoted. If yes, scratch it from your list.

Now your list is much shorter, and is a genuine question that is worthy of contemplation.

Then do what Colton says with the rest of the list.
