Jazz (and NBA) Cap Discussion

Hi there.
Below is a nice summary of Utah's current cap situation. Please see _here_ for a nicely summarized breakdown of other team's situations. Thank you.

Utah Jazz

Committed salary for 2013/14: $27,001,081 (view full forecast)

Projected cap space: $27,722,692

Utah have almost an entire salary cap's worth of money to spend. The only committed salaries they have are $6,008,196 for Derrick Favors, $4,505,280 for Enes Kanter, $3,452,183 for Gordon Hayward, $2,202,000 for Alec Burks, $1,660,257 for Jeremy Evans, $884,293 for Jerel McNeal (fully unguaranteed if waived on or before October 31st) and $788,872 for Kevin Murphy (fully unguaranteed if waived on or before August 1st, then $75,000 guaranteed if waived on or before November 1st, thereafter fully guaranteed). Everyone else is an unrestricted free agent. The only one with an option is Marvin Williams, and the likelihood of him opting out of his $7.5 million was greatly reduced in light of his recent Achilles surgery. Assuming that he opts in, and that everyone else (Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Mo Williams, Randy Foye, Earl Watson, Greg Ostertag, Brevin Knight, Jamaal Tinsley and DeMarre Carroll) are all renounced, and Murphy is not waived, Utah have the following freedom:

Marvin Williams: $7,500,000
Derrick Favors: $6,008,196
Enes Kanter: $4,505,280
Gordon Hayward: $3,452,183
Alec Burks: $2,202,000
Jeremy Evans: $1,660,257
#14: $1,572,600
#21: $1,127,200
Kevin Murphy: $788,872
Roster charge: $490,180
Roster charge: $490,180
Roster charge: $490,180
Roster charge: $490,180

Total = $30,777,308 = $27,722,692 in cap room

There are many semi-plausible combinations of renouncements that could come into play here, and it's impossible to predict which will actually happen, so it is hereby assumed that none of them will. Even those being renounced can still be re-signed, remember. They wouldn't have Bird rights any longer, but, in light of the size of some of these incumbent salaries and the sheer amount of cap room Utah has to give them, they might not need them.

The one thing that jumps off the page is our highest paid player (just play along) is Marvin Williams.
Is there a worse 'highest paid player' in the NBA?

Maybe not. But I bet you can find several worse $7.5 mill players. (And I'm by no means a fan.)

I'm sure, but that's an entirely different topic. Just looking at that roster and seeing the Wet Bandit as our most highly paid player was .. weird.

Had teh Jazz not traded for Marvin Williams, the Jazz would have had a better backup pg all year, a better starting pg when Mo got injured, a much more likely shot at having made the playoffs, and had enough cap room to offer Dwight and CP3 max contracts this summer. (not saying they'd come to play in Utah, but, at least the opportunity to offer would be there)

Such a piss poor move by our front office.

Considering it's an expiring deal, not a huge concern. I still maintain A) he was worth the risk and B) he would have had a very good season if not for Ty and Corbin's "Alfense." Marvin was decent when he was involved in the game. Call a few plays for him, get him a handful of shots and he's a good complementary player. Hayward also struggled as a starter for half the season. The only guys who managed to co-exist with Al were players not looking for shots (like Watson and Tinsley) or chuckers who didn't care about throwing it inside (Foye), or players who just gave up and went through the motions (Millsap).

CP3 and Howard. Yeah, right. The ONLY way the Jazz are going to get very good FA's is via trade. And that's what they have set themselves up for perhaps this summer, but likely at the deadline - i.e. the ability to take on players without giving back salary in return. No team is going to give us a LeBron, Howard, CP3, etc., but Utah may be able to pick up a Harden-like player, i.e. someone a team cannot retain. Or a lesser player that's overpaid PLUS a lottery pick in a deep draft. Marvin's salary is meaningless. It comes off the books this year, just as we need to give Favors and Hayward new, expensive deals. And this is the same reason the FO "foolishly" did not give in to the fans who wanted Al and Paul traded. Lindsey/KOC did NOT want to take on $23M in salaries this season and destroy their cap space flexibility. They're very aware we'll be one of the few teams able to give teams COMPLETE tax relief. And that is going to be extremely valuable to teams not just facing the dollar for dollar tax, but the new 1.5 and 2x tax. Do you think a team facing a $14M penatly for a $7M player wouldn't give up a ton to have that burden completely removed?

I really hate these 20/20 hind sight posts. No one would have guessed Marvin would have fell off worse than he did with Atlanta. The Atlanta Marvin is a decent upgrade to our roster, and easily gets us into the playoffs this year. There is also the "Al" effect, nearly anyone he plays with has their efficiency drop off because he holds the ball for 15 seconds every possession.

Dennis Lindsey is also from the school of squeezing players for every red cent. According to Mark Deeks, the Spurs have three of the seven total instances of not paying rookies 120% of the required scale. 21 is probably too high a pick to go cheap and piss off players/agents over $100,000, but he might try it.

Spurs also love to fill up with very young castoffs since the vet minimum is way lower, then shuffle the deck when salary goes up from the bottom of the barrel.

Anyone have predictions on who we sign, bring back, etc.? Just curious to hear your thoughts.

Let's see, my prediction is:

(from the O.P.)
Marvin Williams
Derrick Favors
Enes Kanter
Gordon Hayward
Alec Burks
Jeremy Evans
#14
#21

Then I think they also bring back Foye.

I think they *don't* bring back Murphy, but I think they sign their second round pick from this draft.

I think they *don't* bring back either Millsap or Jefferson.

I think they resign Tinsley, or someone like that, to provide a "veteran PG presence".

Then I think they take let's say two grossly overpaid players off of other teams' hands in exchange for picks in next year's stocked draft.

I think that about fills out the roster, and cements them into "setting up for the future" mode.

There are some wrinkles... for example, I think they make an offer to Chris Paul which he won't accept. But if he does, then they change philosophies and enter more of a "win now" mentality. Perhaps bring back Millsap in that case.
