Dennis Lindsey Weekly Interview

The Midnight

I'll post the link later, but I'm just catching it at the back end and Dennis said this about a recent planning meeting with Ty:

"I'm really appreciative of Ty, especially in a meeting we just had, Ty said to me that he acknowledged that while this situation (i.e., the plan going forward) may not be the best for him, but it's the best for the organization..."

"When you have a coach to looks forward/ahead to the next seasons and not just today or tomorrow.. that speaks to his character"

Reading between the lines I think this tells me that we're definitely GOING YOUNGGGGG next year guys!!!

Yes, but what is good for the franchise but not the best for Ty may be even better for the franchise.
====================================================================

Also noted how many times he praised the two developmental coaches: Johnny Bryant and Brad Jones. I didn't know that brad Jones had worked for the Spurs with another D Leauge team (the Toros ?)

Noted how he did NOT want to talk about specific prospects.

Said Jazz believe in drafting BPA and hoped to get a rotation player. He said a rotation player like a back-up center or a back-up pg saves assetts so the team can address needs with FA or trades.

I'm still wondering how it is exactly we're supposed to be worse next year. Favors, Kanter, Hayward and Burks are our best 2-way players.

Ty. We don't know if Dennis is an idiot or not yet. We'll see on draft day.

LOL .. yeah.. (Lindsey is a lot more open than KOC is you listen to him careful, he somehow feels the need to answer the questions put to him by the radio station).

I've been thinking about this theory for a while now and I think the reason Millers/KOC/Lindsey kept Ty around is because he's one of the best "Yes Man" you can find as a coach in the league.

Everything the FO had done in the past indicated this:

- The fact that Hornacek is the "odd man out" after he criticized the FO for drafting Burks instead of Leonard. He had been looking for a HC job since last Summer and actively went on interviews this Summer again eventually finding a job with PHX.

- Lindsey also recently revealed in an interview that the FO makes the decision as to who to play and how long to play them. This is contrary to the belief we had at JazzFanz here last year that the FO has no say and that Ty makes all the decision regarding playing time

- Lindsey has since complemented Ty on being "reasonable" and "putting the franchise first"

- Lindsey has since stated in an interview that "Loyalty is most important"

- The FO's insistent on holding on to Ty instead of going out fishing for big name HC such as George Karl, etc, etc, that were let go this year.

To me all of the above tells me that Ty is here to stay and that the FO wants to "groom him" into a lifetime coach with the Jazz. They don't need a maverick HC who moves from team to team. They want someone who is loyal to a fault and someone they can puppet around IMO.

So nobody thinks that Lindsey told Ty that the Jazz are going to get Howard and Paul, and Ty said, well that is not the best for me, but it is good for the franchise.

I find this hard to believe, considering you're talking KOC, because KOC drafted these guys. You would think he would make their development a high priority. Unless he means Greg, which would make more sense because he doesn't seem to know much about basketball.

If this is indeed the case, we're in deep ****.

Yes he did say this in an interview near the end of the season. He said something along the line of:

"No, we don't go in at half time and tell Ty specifically who to play, but we have a discussion now and again about how many minutes certain guys should play and which combinations we would like to see on the court".

This kind of info we never got from KOC, it's just something that Lindsey got asked and he felt comfortable answering...

I heard that interview, and I did not get what you got. Yes, it was revealing that they had conversations about lineups, but in context it did not sound to me at all that Lindsey or KOC was dictating lineups or setting rotation patterns or establishing minutes.

The conversation was more about the use of advanced metrics and how the front office uses them and how they interact with the coach.

To think that the GM does his job without consulting the coach or the coach does his job without consulting the GM is fanciful but not realistic. Ty knows the organization goals and general plans, and he happily complies :)

Well they're not dictating Ty on the specifics, that's not what I meant. What I meant was all 3 of them discuss these things through and come up with an overall plan together. Obviously Ty will have the most weight when discussing minutes, rotations, strategy, etc. It doesn't mean KOC / Lindsey do not have a say though.

Time will tell how good a GM Lindsey is, but I will have to say this: the guy comes across as one of the brightest guys I've heard in the league. I've been really, really impressed with him every time I hear him speak. Now let's just hope that "brightness" translates to success that we can witness on the court.

Summary of Dennis Lindsey Interview (for those too lazy to listen):

Workouts

- workout going well
- structural changes for how workouts are run
- very pleased that agents are appreciative of Jazz's unique position especially that there will be extra minutes and can play straight away
- layup series, kept Sloan/Ty system, but have added additional things
- Have given Brad ideas of what they're looking for (finishing with left hands, corner 3's)
- Brad has D League experience which is beneficial and has done superior job

Draft Strategy

- re McCollum - don't want to "tip our hand"
- Generally - Wanna go with "Best Player"
- Can make argument that there will be some guards there at #14
- Kevin and I agree, we need to take "Guys who will be best overall in his career"
- If we get a guy who's lacking upside/talent, but addressed needs, that's not the position they want
- Rather address "needs" in the free agency

No Stars in this draft

- Yes, but there is a "Market Board" and there is a "Jazz Board", so we can select better
- There isn't a "Tim Duncan" in this draft
- We're excited when we evaluate, there seems to be "Good Players" and if we can get "Rotational" who holds down "cost" rather than going to market, i.e., a "backup Center" or "backup PG".
- While they're not "home runs" but that will allow us to allocate resources else where

Mini-Camps

- Look at why someone can help us
- Can identify those Wing defenders who can make shots

Head Coaching Situation

- Not surprised to see Jason Kidd with the job as he's a tru leader that can lead
- Can make a soap opera with subplots about ownership -> management -> coaching
- So much stress "We can all get short sighted"
- "Win or lose, the management isn't going to blame Coach Sloan"
- It's a competitive business, and an emotional thing

Internal Meetings

- We just got out of "Draft & Free Agents" meeting
- The meeting got emotional
- Had a great meeting with Ty
- Not going to go into specifics
- "He should have been very selfish from a coaching perspective and worry about the next win or the next week. But he just came out and said 'Hey - this strategy might not necessarily be the best for me, but it's the best for the organisation'".
- "He hasn't thrown our young guys under the bus"
- "The Miller family recognized that we have a real Partner (in Ty).
- We want our coach to be organized and do things well.
- "But more than anything we want a real 'Partner'."
- That's what unique with coach Popovich who got a few years in Management and had a unique perspective in what we have to spend ($) and how we need to develop young guys
- "When you get a real Partner who looks past the next game, the next week, the next month, sometimes the next Season, that's worth a lot of money.
- That speaks to Ty about his character.

Coaching & Management Relationship

- Ty is different person to coach Sloan
- Jazz has a young GM & new Coach
- So the group will be wider and more participatory

- This is what I'm used to in San Antonio
- I want to hear coaching opinions, not only relating to strategy, but we've got this player at $5million and someone at $3million and if we can get $3mill guy at a shorter term deal, ...
- Not once in my 17 years experience has a decision been made unilaterally.
- I need to challenge my coaching staff about coming up with a list of players

- Kawhii leonard trade - we were scared!
- He needs to work on finishing, shooting, but if coaching & management are communicating properly,
- when this happens there will be more "Buy In" when a player needs to develop
