First of all watching the Spurs and other playoff teams they have their short clock scoring options all worked out.
For the Spurs first of all they want Parker iso'ed at the top of key. Next they want Duncan at the low block or at the high post. Or they want a Duncan-Parker pick and roll.
Indiana has David West and Paul George.
Memphis has Randolph, Gasol and Conley.
Clippers have Chris Paul.
Miami has Lebron.
Chicago has Rose.
What is going to step up for us?
Last year it was give the ball to Jefferson or Millsap. Jefferson was pretty good at it. Millsap struggled.
Looking forward what is going to be our best short clock option?
Burks has the ability to create a shot when isolated but isn't efficient at converting them. Can he improve his shot that much? Historically most players don't.
Favors doesn't have the offensive polish to get a good shot quickly.
IMO Kanter has some potential in this and maybe he will get his chances this year.
And finally Hayward. I don't like him in ISO situations. But with a Favors or Kanter pick he can be very good.
The problem with pick and rolls late in the clock is you can blitz the ballhandler and you don't have time to swing the ball.
So we really need someone to step forward and be the 'star'. One the main responsibilities of the 'star' is to make some short clock shots.
In other words I am not convinced we have the key piece. We don't have a 'star'. Hayward and/or Kanter could become an offensive star like that. Favors has a spot on any good team as a 3rd or 4th scorer, rebounder and defender. Hayward looks like a very efficient 2nd scorer. But who is going to our #1 option?
And we aren't likely to find such a player at 14 and 21 this year. I hope we can find two rotational players at 14 and 21.
So maybe the 'tank year' plan has some merit. We run with young guys, minimum contract guys and one or two vets and see what assets we can pick with our cap space at the trade deadline. And hope for some good lottery balls.
