It's actually much deeper than that, if you take it to its full conclusion. If God does not exist, then everything is meaningless. All of our values and morals simply become an illusion of the human experience. The only truth to reality is matter and energy, even our concept of truth become illusory. We're all made of dust and we will turn to dust. We live, we die, there is no purpose. Hence there is nothing in it for me to be "good". What's to stop me from crime? Laws? But if I don't care whether I live or die, then I can do anything. (suicide bombing). There is no final judgement. Nothing.

Humans are incredibly human, go figure. The things we want and hope for are not simply the result of our faith. Atheists want pretty much the same things theists want. I have no desire to hurt anyone or to see anyone suffer. Maybe what you think is that I'm like that because God made me like that. That's fine. But the fact remains, with or without God humans are human and we act according to our nature, which in my opinion, is typically good.

With GF on this one. This is flat out wrong. There are plenty of other motivators to be good (the one that is most accepted in the philosophical world is to experience pleasure), and there are certainly other things that give purpose or meaning to this existence.

My father has been having lots of health problems lately so I've been taking him to all his doctor appointments, lab tests, treatments, etc. and invariably, they ask - hell, they don't even ask, they just assume - that I'm his wife.
