Utah liquor cops bust Salt Lake City bar The Spot

The Bayou has made a name for itself in the homebrewing and craft beer community (It's where the Beehive Brew-Off announces winners). This isn't going to help them at all. In fact it could be disastrous for them. The comments on the Trib are not a good sign.

There is a sense in the Utah craft beer community that we're all in this together trying to push the oppressive yoke of the DABC off our shoulders. Then they "sweep the leg" of one of their rivals who managed to provide their customers with beer otherwise unavailable in Utah. It's just dirty and will not play well in a community that has a big "local first" mentality.

I've heard the guys at Epic are a little full of themselves for newbies and don't play well with others. They are the reason beer samplers are not allowed in restaurants anymore in Utah.

I went into their store at the brewery and the guy running the cash register was a grade-A douchebag. He rolled his eyes at me when I politely asked if I could put my beers in the boxes they have sitting next to the beer fridge. Yeah, I figured that's what the boxes were for, thought I'd be nice and ask first. If there's one thing that bugs the **** out of me it's being scoffed at for being polite.

I really like what they're doing though. But I am coming around to the opinion that they are a bit overrated.

I think the Utah liquor policies are lame but still we are just talking about a friggin beverage.....

That's like me crying and bitching because California doesn't sale Jones Soda.

Not really the same because California isn't the one who would sell the Jones Soda. In Utah all liquor, wine and "strong" beer is sold by the people of Utah through our state liquor agency. I would recommend the state getting out of the liquor distribution business and turning it over to people who have no moral compunction against it.

You're right in that it's only a few varieties of a beverage that we can't get. I also understand that the state hasn't banned these beverages, they just don't meet the requirements set by the state to establish an account with whomever distributes that beer. So it has almost nothing to do with the beer itself or state lawmakers wanting to keep it out. Most likely the beer just has too small a market and distributes through a company that for whatever reason doesn't work with the Utah DABC. The three tier distribution system is more of the problem most likely, one that hurts all small and/or independent brewers.

Man oh man, I'm all fired up after watching the PBS 3 part documentary "Prohibition." I know it was made in 2011, but I just watched it on Netflix. All I can say is modern day prohibition, in all it's folly, can't end soon enough.

Couldn't think of a better place to post my thoughts, sorry.

You do have your own forum...

Wats wrong with trying to monopolize a market, eh? Making things hard on entrepreneurs is what Utah is all about.

I will always appreciate Huntsmans approach to governing, which included exposing how anti-business our liquor laws are. You have to strike a chord.
