Okur's reaction for Kanter's situation

Only four foods are banned in the Qur'an. Pig, the flesh of dead animals (like previously dead, obviously all animals are dead when we eat them), blood, and those killed in the name of other than Allah. It says in the Qur'an not to pray intoxicated and that Alcohol is a tool of the devil. More of a warning against Alcohol then an outright ban. Many wahhabi's ban alcohol, they also ban music because it says in the Qur'an to avoid "idle talk" so this somehow also includes banning all music.

I've read reports that enjoying a cold beer in Iran might draw punishments with it in the proportions of how Americans lock up Terrorists.
I did a lot of tutoring when I was younger and most of the kids at the place were Turkish(around 60%). So since I was one of the younger tutors, they wanted to talk to me about anything and would listen to anything I talk about with my colleagues.
And when we were talking about activities that involve alcohol kids were usually leaving to listen. When asking them why, they'd all tell me that the Qur'an despises intoxication. I know they were active Muslims, but since they were young I didn't know how trustworthy their displays were, since they were younger and maybe their parents used that as a trick to tell them to stay away from activities that involve drinking.
That's why I wanted to ask.

Im starting to think that in Kanter's page that whole "Gülen sect", "Hizmet" (service) thing might be for just to annoy some nationalists who bashed him via Twitter after he refused coming to NT. Cause nationalists in Turkey, they are secular, hates Gülen sect like poison and also basketball community in Turkey mostly comprise of nationalists. So i dont think he deeply bonded or wholehearted about this whole "Hizmet" thing.

Or smh someone in Gülen sect find a way to get in touch with Kanter and said "Hey Enesss, dont care about what they're saying, join ussss! We are powerful over here in US and we can provide your needsss, but all we want from you giving a shout out via your Twitter about how awesome the Hizmet isss. Gollum! Gollum!"

I dont know which one is the worse. But good news he deleted "Hizmetin hizmetkarı" (servant of service) definition on his Twitter.. that might be a good start.

Kanter is being screwed again by NT authorities!

Look fellas, I have been criticizing EK severely like noone else does and he deserved it most of the time.
But here and now we have a NT loaded with enuff talent to continue in the "tournoi de la basket" and thet underachieved, like some random loser tries to pick up the finest gal of the school and gets snubbed.
Turkish NT was more even pathetic than this lousy situation.

we should be discussing the attitude of Hedo, who failed in all facets of the term "game play".
we should be discussing Bogdan Tanjevic, who ight be as old as one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. Tanjevic FAILED big time to devise even one game; not even a PnR, for God's sake!
Asik and Ilyasova were terrible.
Preldzic were like shackled by the powers-that-be of the NT, at least initially. cough-Hedon't-cough.

we are served another agenda fellas, one that keeps us distracted from the hard facts of our bball, that Batuk, Cetin, Balbay, Guler are scrub-level players for Euro NT's.

that may not be the whole truth.
as you know TBS, alcohol is banned by the fiqh experts and banning stems from the applications of the Prophet as well as Quran itself.
Quran bans alcohol and this it DID gradually. (nasuh-mansuh thing)

Meh. Pride in one's incidental place of birth is fine, but really, Dalamon is right. Nationalist sentiment is archaic and serves no good purpose. Make no mistake, I consider myself a Westerner and I would gladly give up my life to defend the principles of the Enlightenment. After all, I am American by choice. But that's an objective moral position, not a groupist impulse.
shut up, you disloyal infidel!

:)

Based on what?

I've known him for three years and he's a great guy, very funny, and is still very fond of his time in Kentucky ... I haven't seen any evidence of what you are alluding to that suggests he's some double-crossing scumbag.

All I am trying to say is that he did not show any loyalty to Fenerbahce and to the national team. So, I see no reason why he will be loyal to the Jazz organization when the time comes. Of course, you can argue reasons why there is no need for him to be loyal to FB and NT.

BTW, Fenerbahce is the the most loved and hated sports club in Turkey. Typically, if FB fans hate a player, rest of the country loves him. In this case, Enes managed to be disliked equally by all the sports fans. Not a good judgment

When the time comes, I expect Kanter to act in hi own best interest. It's the job of the Jazz to make sure that Kanter thinks his own best interest is in staying with the Jazz. Loyalty needs to be earned, especially in professional sports, where so many organizations treat athletes like disposable commodities.

Amen. In business I have never preached loyalty to company to my employees (most corps do).
I tell them to give their loyalty to their family and treat their occupation like the stock market. Your time is valuable, search and be sure you're investing your time in the right 'stock' to best take care of your family. If that is this company, great!
Then it's up to me to earn them staying and up to them to remain keepable.

How refreshing would that be?

It always leaves a very bad taste in my mouth when a company needs their employees to constantly demonstrate loyalty and prove just how bad they need the job and how much they love it. Not everyone loves their job. They shouldn't have to. What they should have to do is be good at their job and get it done consistently. The fakest slimiest dirtbags are the best ones at playing the loyalty game, imo.

Employment is a mutually beneficial arrangement between the employee and employer. What does loyalty have to do with it?

As far as Kanter is concerned, I hope Utah is his best option. If he develops ties here and is treated well by the FO and fans then that gives us a leg-up when he starts weighing options. That's all we can ask for.

I agree. Very tough kid but not a headcase. Actually he has a pretty high IQ; his dad, who is a professor, did not want him to be an athlete but an engineer/architect. Kanter still forced his way tho because that's who he is.
I'm not worried about him. He has great work ethic and will only thrive. It's his ego that makes him commit mistakes but will also be the driving force behind turning a star in the NBA.

Him joining the Gulen movement is worrisome. These guys are not radical by any means but Islam is Islam. It's a dangerous religion. Turks are secular (or laic as we call it) so Kanter gets flamed a lot for joining and actively endorsing Gulen sect following his injury. Another bitterness with Turks.. But I must admit people are being disrespectful to his choice.

In Kanter's case, being a devoted Muslim may cause problems if tries to avoid sins, e.g. if he does not have sex for months he prolly will be annoyed like hell and start punching people in the face... or fastens throughout Ramadan month.. If he does not eat/drink for 17 straight hours his body will suffer. And so on.
I truly hope he will realize this is the only life we have and free himself up to make the most out of it.

There are so many wrong things and biased things in this post that I don't find it worthy even to respond. Oh wait...

it's twitter....

there's a reason it's called that, doesn't anyone remember the days when calling someone a "twit" was a pretty big insult?

at any rate, some pretty good insights in this thread vis a vis cultural differences and Kanter's age and maturity level

But experience it a great teacher and he'll probably learn from this experience to use a bit more discretion in the future.
