Okur's reaction for Kanter's situation

Actually the NCAA thing is kinda connected to the NT thing. Same coach for one thing. And Fenerbahçe has a major major MAJOR MAJOR impact on the Turkish youth talents pool. They got the biggest fishing pole for the lake. I really feel sorry for the kid even though he appears like a real dumb *** when only judged by tweets. But I think he is just a young player that got fame shocked in his early 20ies and actually having a hard time dealing with it. He is not an acehole I think, but he tweets crap for fun, lacking the knowledge that this kind of thing will get your ace busted in your home country man! Don't you know anything?!? Gawl!

Thank you.

I always thought that Efes Pilsen was #1 in Istanbul...

Nationalism leads to far more bad than good and it's a wholly silly premise in an age when we are privileged enough to understand that "they" are usually not that different from "us".

While this post certainly makes a great point, I think it should be quite obvious why countries of the Eurasian region take national pride so seriously. Nationalism is being made obsolete by a growingly globalized world, its true. But I would argue that this statement maintains validity mostly in the western world.

I think you would have trouble telling an Albanian family living in Kosovo (who just gained independence as a country in 2008) that nationalism is a silly premise.

You wanna know a funny thing? It applies for other Euro leagues but the Turkish team names usually are chocolate, snacks and milk brand names added in the front or in the end of the real name. They sell their names to hang on to it economically. Efes Pilsen is a common beer brand. They put glucose syrup in it Gameface! Imagine a team named the Denver Mountain Dews.

I think Numbs was taken out of context there just a bit, Dala... though I may be wrong.

Pride in one's country is different than short-sighted "us-against-the-world" and "they're" all out to get us and they're all devils. I took Numbs to mean that kind of Nationalism.

I'm proud to be an American (though I admit that at times it's diminishing) but I am also self aware and understand not everyone wants what we have and how smug and 'better' we are generally. I am not deluded (like too many Americans) that the U.S. is Heaven on earth and everywhere else is 3rd world and they envy us.

Orangello jumping ship in 3..2..

Wait, we haven't killed you yet? ****.

If Feto were ruling a country and Siro were living in it, he would be long dead!

Or, ahem, he would lick arse of Feto not to lose his head, at the end Siro is a smart guy.

It's all a part of the same thing. Worry about and do what's right and let the rest fall into place. That applies to country, family, and friends. Loyalty isn't a standalone virtue, it's completely contingent on what it's tied to.

I knew Efes Pilsen is a beer, but what I was always curious about is that there's many muslims in Turkey right? And for active Muslims isn't it a sin to consume beer?
My local team is called "Telekom Baskets Bonn". Obv an international telecommunication provider. We got flashy magenta jerseys, that others refer to as pink and try to mock us in any thinkable way(w/o success needless to say).
What kind of company is Fenerbahce? Or has it another official name?

They were until about 10 years ago.

And Fenerbahçe wasn't good at basketball before they merged the club with Ülkerspor which was the second best after Efes.

Well half of th population skoals it without thinking twice. More than half of the other half hides the same action. And the rest doesnt even touch cologne or sit in the same table if someone
Drinks.

Fener is oone if the three biggest and dominating sports club in here. They became one with a team named Ülker -snacks company name also another succesfull ball team- and became even bigger but beared to be called Fenerbahçe Ülker.

We have Telekom team too. They were Okur s lockout team right? They were legendary in the late 90ies.

It's true. I still pretend to be a Muslim whenever I travel to the Middle East. :D

Meh. Pride in one's incidental place of birth is fine, but really, Dalamon is right. Nationalist sentiment is archaic and serves no good purpose. Make no mistake, I consider myself a Westerner and I would gladly give up my life to defend the principles of the Enlightenment. After all, I am American by choice. But that's an objective moral position, not a groupist impulse.

After reading all of this I am happy that we finally got our own big tough headcase. I am totally happy that he opted to bang porn stars, trash talk on twitter NT coaches who had said and probably done bad things to him and have an affair with a questionable sect without all drugs, guns, freak appearance, wife beating and other **** that normally comes with being a headcase in the NBA. Karl Malone was a good example of a moderate headcase. Enes just needs his Stockton.

I agree. Very tough kid but not a headcase. Actually he has a pretty high IQ; his dad, who is a professor, did not want him to be an athlete but an engineer/architect. Kanter still forced his way tho because that's who he is.
I'm not worried about him. He has great work ethic and will only thrive. It's his ego that makes him commit mistakes but will also be the driving force behind turning a star in the NBA.

Him joining the Gulen movement is worrisome. These guys are not radical by any means but Islam is Islam. It's a dangerous religion. Turks are secular (or laic as we call it) so Kanter gets flamed a lot for joining and actively endorsing Gulen sect following his injury. Another bitterness with Turks.. But I must admit people are being disrespectful to his choice.

In Kanter's case, being a devoted Muslim may cause problems if tries to avoid sins, e.g. if he does not have sex for months he prolly will be annoyed like hell and start punching people in the face... or fastens throughout Ramadan month.. If he does not eat/drink for 17 straight hours his body will suffer. And so on.
I truly hope he will realize this is the only life we have and free himself up to make the most out of it.

Only four foods are banned in the Qur'an. Pig, the flesh of dead animals (like previously dead, obviously all animals are dead when we eat them), blood, and those killed in the name of other than Allah. It says in the Qur'an not to pray intoxicated and that Alcohol is a tool of the devil. More of a warning against Alcohol then an outright ban. Many wahhabi's ban alcohol, they also ban music because it says in the Qur'an to avoid "idle talk" so this somehow also includes banning all music.
