I was about 13 during the Finals run so I dont remember alot of the details about players and trades...etc. So I just read this story about the failed trade of getting this center Rony Seikaly. Here are a couple of articles about.

So for you older fans that have better memories and understanding of that trade and player......would he really made much of a difference?

To me the question is if Karl Malone had taken a drop in salary so the Jazz could add one more piece in 97 or 98 (Free agents we potentially could have had at the time:Brent Barry, Theo Ratliff, Jimmy Jackson, Rick Fox, David Wesley, George Mcleod, among others). The reason I ask is because he took a huge cut (signed for $1.x million)to go to the Lakers in 2003/2004 when he could have commanded $10m.

If he took a cut when it mattered he would have his ring. Not saying he should have taken a pay cut at all, but if you are going to, do it when it matters.

You can't take a cut when you already signed your contract. The NBA doesn't allow for a player to restructure their contract. Secondly, Malone wasn't the problem because he was underpaid for years before he signed his big contract. He earned it. The Jazz messed up when they overpaid for Ostertag.

A healthy Ronny Seikaly would have made a big difference. Unfortunately he was the same player he was in Orlando and had health problems. I don't know if he would have helped us win it because it would have still been difficult with Dick Bavetta as the referee. I think if there were no Dick Bavetta the Jazz would have a championship.

Was it originally thought he just hated Utah?

Larry Miller:
``It's frustrating because Rony's saying all the right things, that he wants to come, he wants to play for a championship, but his agent is saying, flat-out, that he's not coming,'' Jazz owner Larry Miller said. ``It's a huge disappointment for us. We'll just have to figure out what play `B' is and go on from there.''

Seikaly ended up getting traded to New Jersey that same season, only played in 9 games and basically never mattered in the NBA again. He might have mattered had he been Rony seikaly of previous years, but it didn't actually affect the Jazz in 98. Frankly we almost assuredly would have missed Foster/Morris more.

Seikaly also is probably a player that looked better under the metrics of 1998 that he would look with a more modern eye on what constitutes a productive NBA player.

This board just cracks me up so much.Im not even a jazz fan but the lack of bball knowledge here keeps bringing me back for a laugh. ONE QUESTION. Could he have guarded Hakeem? Didn't think so, so why would the jazz have had a better chance with him on the roster. This is funniest thing ive ever seen on this board and that alone says so much

Because Hakeem knocked them out of the playoffs in 98?

I put in bold the part where you said something highly ironic, if not moranic.

randomly found this thread. since seikaly was on the last legs of his career i'd say no.

Dude.........so many legitimate bumps....this? You can do better. Bump one of your old creations. You've been around for a while and you create stuff that nobody else does. Don't be shy about bumping some old prodigy stuff...will rep.

I looked at the game log VS the Bulls. Morris & Foster didn't do much against the Bulls. Having Seikley's scoring would have helped. Keefe, Ostertag & Foster didn't do much as our centers (Ostertag didn't get many minutes in the Finals, either).

Seikley would have gotten a lot of minutes at the position. And it's not like Wennington, Longley & Kleine would have abused him.
