Jazz Bench

Our bench is horrible. With Sap moving into the starting lineup and with Cj being so inconsistant its hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I don't see it getting much better until Okur comes back. I also hope that Price steps up and takes over the mins from Watson as he might be the worst back up point guard we have ever had.

For the life of me I can't understand why Watson signed with Utah - he's not big enough or has the outside shot to play the 2 so he must have known he was looking at 12mpg max coming in. Maybe he was worried his psycho wife would leave him if he didn't have a job.

When you take a veteran and then cut his minutes by more than half; you're not getting the same player. He's not taking any shots because he has no confidence in it because he's not getting enough burn. My guess is he struggles mightily all year.

This is AK's fault. Freaking Max contract. Jazz have had to give away assets or let players walk away because of his contract. Can't do that for 3 straight years and keep a bench. Also shouldn't draft a project if your bench is short.

I hope KOC is back on the phone with denver and Charlote trying to make something happen--ship AK out for Diaw and a shooting gaurd.

So you're telling me you wouldn't take a big raise at your job if offered? It's management's fault for giving him this big contract. That said, let's see how he does given this is a contract year and not judge him on one game.

Yeah, Okur will really shore up that interior defense--or scoring for that matter.

Utah will get better when he starts deciding to play less of two PF's out there, Boozer-Millsap style. All I'm asking is 20 MPG of centers. The win against OKC was false hope because they don't have a deep center rotation. Most players in the league do, and Fes + Elson would do OK against a poor-scoring biedrins and a doughboy David Lee. Just needed more toughness out there. Sloan should've sat down AJ or Millsap for 5 minutes each for the poor boxing out alone.

Um, Watson didn't go 1 for 5 out there like Price did. Watson didn't shoot at all, but he logged 3 assists in 10 minutes with minimal mistakes. A bit too much scoring from Curry when he was out there, but maybe that's the "5-minute punishment" from the 15 minutes that he should have gotten.

Everyone except Jefferson, Williams and Bell seemed to be rushing their shots vs GS. Yeah, boxing out seems to be a lost art these days. CJ seems to be pressing. Watson is not that bad; he doesn't force up shots. He tries to set others up when he's got the ball, and is a pesky defender. He's likely still figuring out how to work with teammates; he'll be fine.
Hayward looked a bit out of it last night, but only played 4 minutes. When him and Evans start to 'get it', our bench will be a lot better...

No, not saying that he shouldn't have taken the money, or that I wouldn't have taken it. But I sure wouldn't have taken the money then stuck my head in the sand, or go crying on TV or waited 5 years before lifting a weight or working on my shot. He has gotten progressivley worse over the years.

AK is like the guy in your office that worked hard for a few years got a manaegment position because someone else retired, and now sits in his office all day playing solitare.

He is like the high school teacher that behaved for three years, got tenure and now turns the tv on for his students, while he ducks out to the teacher lounge.

I'm done with waiting for him. I've waited for 6 years and he hasn't shown yet. I can't wait till july 1.

If your best player coming off the bench is CJ and he is the one and only player among 2nd unit who already knows what's going on on the court, you surely gonna struggle. Earl Watson is too hesitant and seems like he has tough time learning, absorbing the system. Price is a hustle guy but he is not a real PG, one of last players whom I want to orchestrate this complicated offense. The Jazz better make some adjustments in rotation. CJ and his awfully inconsistent game + tendency to take stupid shots are not enough sparks off the bench. One of Millsap or Jefferson should come out midway through first quarter and at the start of second Q, he should be the reliable option inside and balance the inside/outside threat-production, when you have some players that are in love with jacking up threes. Until Memo comes back, Fesenko should be the guy coming in for the frontcourt player that will leave the court at mid-first quarter. He knows the system and his size and length and effort on rebounds might change the scenario in favor of us.

CJ is Smok'n again

Let's see CJ is 1 for 12 tonight and chasing and grabbing on defense. Someone please get the coach some glasses. This is hilarious.

Depth is a huge issue right now. I just wrote on it last night, but in the last 4 games, 6 players have taken 83% of the minutes. That has worked OK over these last 4 games (winning 3), but what about next week when they play 4 road games in 5 nights? What about at the 50 game mark?

My hope is that Sloan is circling the wagons for now, but that someone (ANYONE) will be a little more ready so he can spread the minutes a little more soon. Plus Okur will be back eventually, and maybe even Evans' return can help out.

In my eyes, there is a complete lack of leadership on the 2nd unit. I'd rather see Miles starting at SG and use Raja Bell as the b/u SG. He is much more seasoned and has very good leadership qualities. I knew Watson wasn't Deron Williams, but being new to the organization, he's not a good candidate. CJ is justtoo young and prone to mistakes. Raja Bell is well known and respected, and is a solid, ALL ROUND player. Whatever a team needs, he can deliver it. IMO, a perfect 6th-man candidate!
CJ would have the pressure of scoring every time he touches the ball quickly removed if he were with the starting unit...

I don't actually think we'll see much of the 2nd unit at all until the starters show that they can gel and understand their defensive rotations. Sloan obviously can't let the starters play 48 minutes so he'll continue to spell the starters, but I don't think there'll be a 2nd unit rotation to speak of until about 15 games in.

If you bring Raja off the bench who scores on the second unit?
You write as if CJ Miles has been scoring "on" the second unit.

Purely coincidentally, both Bell and Miles are shooting an embarrassing 35.6% now, so from that standpoint, it's an even swap. On a FG% basis, Hayward would be a better (less bad) choice.

Boxing out and getting pwned off the dribble has little to do with "gelling." Besides, 4 of 5 starters are Jazz returnees, so that would mean that Jefferson is the only one who needs to "gel". If you look at the first 3 highlights of the Warriors game, AJ is just standing around. That should be enough for any coach who preaches defense and practice what he preaches to reduce his minutes. Jefferson can "gel" in 30 minutes per game about as easily as 35 or 40. Meanwhile, the centers can actually control the paint and enable the other players to do better on both ends of the court.

On the wing, I support the experiment of starting CJ, given that Miles has been cold so far on average coming off the bench and given that Bell hasn't exactly distinguished himself in the starting lineup.
