I don't watch a lot of NFL football, but watching the epic Saints VS Patriots game last weekend made me realize something....

Tom Brady

Tom-Brady-Game-winner-Saints.gif

Brady was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. In Brady's eleven seasons as a starter, the Patriots have earned trips to the Super Bowl in five of them, winning three. His career postseason record is 17–7; his playoff win total is the highest in NFL history.

Hundreds of thousands of Patriots fan cheering them on to win on Sunday and all I saw was a franchise build on 1 man, 1 star player. It all started when the Patriots drafted Tom Brady.

Conclusion:

In this 2014 draft - what we need is at least 1 MAIN-MAN-4-LIFE player.

- It doesn't matter if Burke is hurt.

- It doesn't matter if we have Corbin this year.

- It doesn't matter if we lose EVERY-SINGLE-GAMES this season.

- It doesn't even matter if somehow the ESA came down in an earthquake tomorrow!!!

So calm down guys, turn that frown upside down... and let's focus on grabbing that 1 MAIN MAN-4-LIFE this next Summer.

Now tell me who's your MAIN-MAN-4-LIFE and WHY?

Aaah, the tank. Big surprise there. The NBA is broken the way that they do things. Frankly, I almost wish that the draft were eliminated entirely and just let players go where they want to. That way a team who is winning and just needs that final player could talk a Wiggins into coming over to fill in the gap instead of these players going to badly run organizations that can't win even with lottery picks most of the last ten years (what was the Clippers and Toronto until recently).

DOWN WITH THE DRAFT!

yeah, i know, i'm on one today

But then we would never get players...

Nonsense, we'd get a bunch of spunky untertalented players who work hard, but get overlooked because of being undersized and not playing for national powerhouse teams. Oh yeah, we had that for years and went nowhere. I bet Jabari would come here.....

Yeah, i get it, it's a problem, but the Spurs seem to do alright with their good management and years of success. Why not us? Why not now? My hope is that with semi new management the team will start to resemble San Antonio more and more and players will want to not only come here but stay here. Because, let's face it, Deron even lives here and he wouldn't commit to stay here. What's the point of drafting a future superstar if they leave after four years? Sure, we match the offer which is overpriced because that's the way restricted free agency is, and we are financially ruined for another four to five years. Basically, unless a player is obviously a max type player, we overpay and will never get anywhere unless our culture is so good that players choose to play here for less because of the type of organization that we have.

I agree that the draft system is broken. It encourages teams to put out a poor product and give the fans a poor show.

Maybe instead of a draft and draft lottery we could help poor teams rebuild by giving them a higher salary cap for a few years or something. I really don't know but it isn't good for the sport, imho.

They do have a "Tom Brady" with their Tim Duncan.......

Apart from the Big 3 that the Spurs draft, who is the biggest FA they signed?

Why couldn't you use an analogy that we would understand? How are we supposed to understand something that happens in Boston? What about the Mailman? All you had to change was one letter: Mail-Man-4-Life... plus, he is back with the organization now.

One player can change the direction of a basketball team like in no other sport. The only comp is a QB in football.

Even if you get the best pitcher in baseball you don't become the top 3 team. Need other good pitchers, and plenty of hitting. In basketball if you get the best player you become a top team.

Or in your scenario, if Wiggins went to a contender instead of a bad team the rich get richer and that bad team would never get better. Ever. This isn't baseball. The athletics can do what to they do because of how different baseball is from basketball.

It's the same reason that you can't have every team in the lottery. Heat win it? They are on top another ten years while bad teams never get better.

I'm sorry but I don't want to follow a team forever that gets the "overlooked hard worker" every year. I want a contender. And as a fan of a team that will not attract a top FA, i need to have hope that my team will get a top caliber player eventually.

The system works. It's flawed but it works. You think the Clippers are what they are without Blake Griffin? Not even close. CP3 would never have agreed to a trade there which only happened because he was willing to sign the extra year.

I've read through pages and pages and pages of arguments against the system that is in place but haven't seen a system that doesn't screw over the teams that have less talent.

Oh and make no mistake. As someone else said, the Spurs aren't a fraction of what they are without Duncan. So there goes that part of the argument out the window. Without him they are Portland, or the Pacers or some other mid-tier franchise.

This. Rep'd.

I just wanted us to take a fresh look at the situation and I thought the QB analogy from football is a good one.

Guess what Duncan did? He stayed with his small market team even after his rookie and RFA contracts were up. Know why? because the culture of the team told him that he would have success on it. I am as annoyed as anyone else that the Spurs tanked to get him, but regardless of that, he stayed on the team because he felt they were a good fit. That's what I want, a team that players want to play for regardless of market size or the number of strip joints and bars available to them.

To be honest we do not know. Just as the Pats did not know when they first got Brady.
