Punch Bowl Re-Filler
OK, as much as I've criticized him in the past - and I'm not saying he didn't deserve it - I have to praise Ty for a lot of what he's done right in pre-season and game #1:
1. Keeping Mike Harris. I would have guessed a PG or even Brian Cook. I doubt any of us expected Harris to stick and he was the X-Factor in a near monumental upset.
2. Playing and playing Alec Burks. Alec got 32 mins. Ty stuck with him over Hayward for a good portion of the 4th. He even played some at PG. Yes, Alec deserved every minute of that time, but how often have we seen Ty (or Sloan) or other coaches for that matter, bring back in the starters and send a sub who has been playing well to the bench?
3. Giving time to Gobert: I know the Jazz were thin without Biedrins and Evans. But Corbin could have played RJ some at the 4. Instead, Gobert gets 20+ mins and has a definite effect on the game, even if his stats weren't overly impressive.
4. Interior defense: we know Ty is being evaluated on the defensive performance of the team. Well, our bigs won their matchup: OKC 4/5's only scored 20 pts on 9-25 FG's.
5. Substitutions/Adjustments: Corbin did not stick with rigid substitutions. He tried different guys on Durant. As mentioned, he stuck with the players who had the hot hand (Burks) or who were playing hard defensively (Harris).
You look at the stat sheet and wonder how the Jazz lost: well, Ty isn't responsible for poor passing or terrible FT-shooting. Even giving Durant all those trips to the line, the Jazz shot nearly as many FT's. The team played aggressively and I've got to say it was a well-coached game by Corbin.
