World's oldest living animal

This doesn't take into account immortal animals like Jellyfish?

Are you referring to Turritopsis dohrnii ?? Because as far as I know, its 'immortality' (unique, relative to almost all other jellyfish) has only been witnessed in the laboratory, and not in nature

How do you witness immortality in nature? This mollusk was pulled out of the ocean in 2006. So it wasn't witnessed to have lived for 500 years either. I'm confused since a few species are known to have a vast lifespan. How did they decide this one was the oldest?

The 'immortality' in this case is the ability to return to the asexual 'polyp' stage of a cnidarian's life-cycle, by-passing what would normally mean death for 99.9% of all jellyfish. Again, this phenomenon probably happens in nature too-- but as of now, it has only been witnessed in the lab. So we can't talk with full certainty.

Theres a couple ways that you could tell-- Im only familiar with the genetics-methods (whether using mtDNA, or telomeres).

Either way, cnidaria have their fare share of predators and pathogens that they deal with, so I'd be surprised if they managed to track one down that lived for a really long time.

I see what you're saying. So while there are known mechanisms that can probably help an animal achieve a very long lifespan, scientists haven't found another animal that is verified to be older than that mollusk. That makes sense.

Meh, I've eaten older molusks.

I have read about that one. Very fascinating and conclusions were that it theoretically can live forever but for obvious reason ( predators and diseases) it does not happen in nature.

Ummmmm...Buckner?
