BYU vs ND on Sat

Lastly, is this really the exposure BYU wanted when they declared Independence 3 years ago? Do you think ESPN is having second thoughts?

IMO, BYU has completely underachieved since declaring independence. This type of exposure, passionless and inept, can only hurt the program.

The Utes have struggled because they haven't had a QB since Brian Johnson. Byu struggles because their coaches utterly REFUSE to coach.

Simple questions... Colton, you work at the school and maybe know something I don't.

What happened to the creativity? The imagination? The passion?

I'm certainly not the expert. I won't complain too much about the defense, though--Bronco's style has done well. Not a lot of creativity or imagination, but he does usually get the defensive players to play with passion. As far as the offense goes, well Anai is better than Doman was but that's about all I can say. I'm hoping that there's a delay going on in the recruiting because of missions and that Anai has recruited a bunch of offensive linemen that we just haven't seen yet.

Saying that Rob Anae is an upgrade over Doman is like saying that Ty Corbin is an upgrade over Vinny Del Negro or Jason Kidd....

I just can't take it anymore. Whether it's against Boston College, Utah, TCU, Florida St, Nevada, Boise St, UCLA, Arizona, Washington, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, or any other team worth anything, it's the exact same storyline.

Anae just flat out doesn't have the creativity or imagination.. Or the work ethic to develop a diversified game plan, motivate his players, and call an "unpredictable" game.

Rob Anae's playcalling broken down:

1st down: run up the middle with Brown/Tonga/Vacapuna/Unga/Williams. Usually a minimal gain.
2nd down: quick pass to attempt to get something going on 2nd down.
3rd down: 20 yard heave to harline/Collie/Hoffman that more often than not results in an incomplete pass
4th down: punt/attempt a FG

what happened to the west coast offense that made this program what it was 20 years ago? Where's that quick passing game? Where's that run game which takes the burden off the QB? Where's the play action that sets up the big play? Why aren't the backs or TEs used as the release valve when there's nothing open downfield/when Taysom is blitzed? Where are the screens and draws to take advantage of a defense's over aggressiveness? Where are the trick plays?

Where's the creativity and passion?

I'm not sure I understand the logic of drop 8 or drop 7 model of defense. Supposedly the reason you do it is to protect your deficiencies in the secondary. But when you don't put pressure on the QB, you just give those WRs all day to work on your deficient Dbs. Friggin' Deion Sanders would get burned every time if you gave the WR enough time to find a move that works, or an open space to run to, how can you expect Skye Povey to cover anybody for more than a few seconds? Sean Mannion looks like Peyton Manning without pressure, with it -- he crumbles. Same with Mr. INT @ Utah. Dude is horrible when you get a little pressure on him. I hate seeing replays where BYU rushes 3 and they all end up on their backs because they get double teamed and the offense ends up converting a 3rd and 14 or something.

A couple of things: BYU and Utah aren't good teams. 3-7 for Utah and 2-4 for BYU against BCS teams...ouch. TCU is 2-7. This is why non-BCS teams should not be eligible for BCS bowl games or the playoffs. You just aren't good enough. The "week in week out" argument is legit, and BYU doesn't even have that problem.

QB is the biggest issue for all three teams:

Hill 67.8
Wilson 66.6 (ha ha)
Boykin 39.3
Schulz 59.4

That is pathetic. Well, we did nothing but prove the mid-major haters right...

I seriously hope SOS is the #1 indicator for the playoffs. Because if you aren't in a BCS conference you did NOT do enough to prove you belong. In 2004, there is no way Utah should have been in over Aburn. Same with 08. Utah probably isn't undefeated in a BCS conference. No way Hawaii is, or No Ill, or Boise either.

What happens to BYU now? They lose a TON of NFL talent this year. Do they have NFL talent to replace them?

Is Hill the future? Do they have big bodies to replace Manumaluna? The OL should be better next year. Disappointing year all around. I guess USU should be congratulated on their season. They are one team that faced adversity and triumphed.

But Utah and BYU would do the same thing in the MWC. #midmajorhater.

They'll be fine. They have like 7 D-lineman coming back from missions, 2 returning starters, and a few studs they didn't use this year because of injures. A couple of those guys probably will move to O-line, and they've got a guy that started at Tackle and did well for TCU that can play next year. They'll be fine there. Their top 3 corners didn't even play this year due to injures and they'll all be back. One safety spot could be iffy. Linebackers are a question mark. I think BYU probably ends up running a 4-3 next year if Bronco is smart.

That's good for BYU. The good thing about a 3-4 is BYU usually has very, very good LB'ers and you can hide your secondary to a certain extent with those LB'ers.

What about Hill? Do you open it up? I probably wait until after the bowl game. If Hill goes 2-5 vs BCS teams, I probably open it up.

You think you just switch out a guy that goes 3,000 yards passing, 1,000 rushing in a season? That's enough production for me to say you still have a starting QB the next year, regardless of the losses. Plus, we don't have 6 guys waiting in the wings. In fact, Bronco hates our backup QBs so much that he intentionally burned two of their redshirt years for a few plays of mop up duty against Idaho State. They're all in with Taysom Hill, then Tanner Magnum QB situation. Who knows what they'll have if either of those guys go down. I think the #2 guy could probably play well if needed right now, but he's in Taysom Hill's class so....

My prediction is that Taysom Hill goes Pro after next year.

And of course, we know your thoughts on SoS are rubbish. Those Utah teams back a few years would've rolled the Pac 12 this year. The Pac 12 has proven to be exactly what I said. A conference of a lot of solid teams, but nothing crazy on top. That Urban Meyer guy seems to be a pretty good coach, eh? Considering every team he goes to gets good while he is there, and then they fall off a cliff a few years later. Florida lost to friggin' Georgia Southern yesterday. You can't chalk that up to anything other coaching. I haven't even seen Florida play this year, but we know they have the athletes.

They'll be fine.

By the looks of some of the posts in here by BYU fans, they're not "fine" right now. How are they going to be "fine" after losing two of their all-time greats in Hoffman and Van Noy? And that's just for starters.

I do think Hill will improve as a QB, but doubt he will ever be anything more than slightly above average.

They did snag a good JC WR(Nick Kurtz) to attempt to replace Hoffman so that's where a lot of that hope will come from. Michael Davis was like the second fastest high schooler in California last year or something and he was playing spot duty in the secondary this year because of injury, but he's normally a WR. So there's two possibilities at WR. They would be wise to get a few JC WRS though because they need them.

And by "fine" I just mean that they should be able to replicate the average Bronco Mendenhall year. 8 or 9 wins. There is a good chance that Green's schedule arguments might be more meaningful next year though because I see a 30-40 drop in SoS ranking from this year to next on early glance. But who knows, teams change every year. But if that holds and they can show some balls on the road @ Texas early, they could do some poll climbing early.
