The guy was a bonafide superstar with little athetic ability. The mind he has to have for basketball to pull that off must be insane. Can't be any worse than Corbin (or Kidd for that matter). Don't think he'll do it, but making moves to energize the fan base isn't always a bad thing.

How much would you slit your wrists if another NBA team announced Stockton as their new Head Coach tomorrow?

I'd slit my wrists a whole hell of a lot. Maybe even a butt-load.

UGLI puts it into perspective. It's only right that if Stockton ever coaches in the NBA he coaches our team. There's no way he works his way up the ranks as an assistant, and he doesn't need to. He is not currently missing some sort of critical piece of information he could glean from Corbin or anyone else. Hiring him at the end of this season to take over the Jazz would be a huge win from a marketing perspective, a basketball perspective, a culture perspective, a fan base perspective, a national story perspective and everything else. The timing is perfect for the team, and (from afar) it looks like it could be good timing for Stockton too.

I actually ran into him at a conference in NYC this summer. We talked briefly. I think he would make an amazing head coach. To me it would be disastrous to watch him lead a team other than the Jazz to the promised land.

The question is if Stockton wants to coach. I agree, seems like a possibility now more than ever before.

I wouldn't put the odds of Stockton wanting to coach at greater than 10%, but if he did he would be great.

There is a lot he has to learn. Playing b-ball and coaching b-ball are vastly different.

What odds would you have put on him writing and then going on a promotional tour for a book? Did you think you'd hear him talking on national media outlets long after his playing career ended? I'd put the odds of him wanting to coach at 70% (maybe higher). He's a type A personality who is probably extremely happy about how involved he was able to be in his children's lives as the result of his financial situation, but now the kids are mostly (if not completely) out of the house. I could easily imagine him looking for a challenge, and winning an NBA championship might be the perfect one because in many ways the quest would be a continuation of the goal that just barely eluded his grasp during his playing days. Also, I doubt there's a team he'd rather coach than the Jazz. If he's ever going to do it it's difficult to imagine that the stars could ever come into better alignment than they are going to this summer.

I agree on the book tour thing. Was SHOCKED at all the promotion he did.

Stockton + Wuggins = Championship in under 5 years.

Been gone from this forum for awhile so it seemed to me you had dropped off the face of the earth. Whats up guy? Trying to foment a little racial disharmony here? Both threads i looked at today have a post from you trying to suggest that race is an issue here there and everywhere and especially in Jazztown. Well not so much. The color of a persons skin may occur to you on a daily basis but many, many people don't give a fig about the subject. I truly like and admire every person of color on our team and i am especially fond of Favors, Burke, Burks and Hayward. Also Gobert and Raul Neto. Not saying you are the devil's advocate, but Grandpa will watch ya. Still not a fan of Devin Harris by the way, nor was i when he was here.

Absolutely love Stockton. Brains, strategist, competitor. I believe he'd be a bad NBA head coach because he is introverted and extremely private and dealing with the press would be a huge drain on him. As a player he hated public relations stuff, preferring to hang up the sneakers and go home and play with his kids. And he was highly perplexed by the new generation of player. He is as old school as Sloan, and Sloan was old school 15 years ago. My prediction is that he'll coach at Gonzaga (although their HC is pretty young) or some other mid-level college. Those of you who haven't read his autobiography might want to leaf through it, it gave a lot of insight into these issues.
 
I remember before Larry died, that there were a few journalists who said something to the effect that when Jerry retired that the job was stocktons if he wanted it. Must not have wanted it then. I would totally be happy with Stockton as coach.
 
I missed the part where John Stockton was really Phil Jackson.
Everybody needs to chillax, man. We don't need to always be doing this "hire from within" jack.
