Could you imagine what Stockton could do in today's game, with no hand checking and no defense? He would have made Nash look pedestrian. It wouldn't surprise me if Malone and Stockton played today, Stock would average 18 assists a game. Or his assists would be around the same (10-12) and his scoring would be in the low 20's.

But it is fun to imagine Stockton running Deron Williams into a Karl Malone screen....I can almost see the grimace on Derons face as he shakes his wrist and limps down the floor screaming at the ref.....
Or how about Stockton setting one of those base line back screens on Anthony Davis who responds by breaking in half.
I miss the old nba where teams and players had distinct personalities. The animosity between players made the competition better. Now the only drama the nba can drum up is trade speculation and draft anxiety. Yawn.

I remember a game in his rookie year when the defense wasn't respecting his shot and left him an open 15-footer early in the shot clock. He didn't take it and the team ended up shooting a desperation shot at the buzzer that missed. Stockton knew he screwed up and never made that mistake again -- ever. Typically he would never look to shoot, but I never saw him pass up another opportunity to score if the defense wasn't guarding him.
it's a different game. curry attempted 600 3pters last season. stockton's most in a season was 227. curry already attempted 262 3pters and he only played 33 games!
if stockton jacks it up 600 times, i have to assume his % would go down because 600 attempts means you are shooting over defenders in many occasion. you gotta shoot while you dribble, do step backs, and even attempt many wild acrobatic shots.
and ya'll need to understand that stockton didn't have a scorer's mentality like curry. Curry jacks it up no matter what. guys like that will always have good days and bad days. stockton was a consistently a high % guy(on 2's and respectable on 3''s), but guys like stockton don't shoot when shots don't fall. like steve nash, stockton was a great timely shooter who didn't force the action. that's why many of us wished stockton to shoot more. but that's not his game. after all he is the purest point guard ever walked on earth. HE DIDN'T HAVE TO SHOOT.

Yes, Stockton was criticized about not shooting enough. I think one of his greatest moments was the fourth quarter of the 97 WCF against the Rockets when Stockton took over the game with his shooting. If John had been that aggressive I at other times I think the Jazz would have won a championship. John was a great shooter and Mark Jackson is a whiny B$&#(*$h for saying what he said.

I disagree that Stockton always took high-percentage shots. He was an incredibly smart player. If the highest-percentage shot was his own, he took it when it was there. Otherwise, he was shooting fairly often at the end of broken plays. If a play fell apart the ball ended up back in his hands and he pretty frequently had to take the last-second desperation heave. And quite frequently he made it. But his percentage was maintained because he was so smart. Back off of him while dribbling down-court and he would step into a wide-open 3, or sag off him while he was driving to cover the pass and he would lob in the short runner, or be on the wrong side of one of his also-record steals and he often ended up with an uncontested layup. His percentage is as much a testament to his exceptional basketball smarts as his shooting ability.

I think Terry Porter was a better point guard than Jackson back in the day and a more formidable opponent to Stockton.
Mark Jackson never shot over 50% for a season in his entire 17 year career and he's a career 33% 3pt shooter...and suddenly he's an "authority" on good shooters? LOL.

Geez calm down woman...it just seems ironic to me that Jackson is degrading Stockton's shooting ablility when he himself wasn't even an average shooter. That would be like Gordon Hayward saying Michael Jordan wasn't that great of a clutch player.
