What next? 2014-15 Cap & Tax Space

And trades involving picks, cap space and other assets (Kanter?). There are different ways to improve the team. I'm sure if DL doesn't like the FA class in 2014, he could just do another 2013, albeit for less than $30M. Give a team some cap space in exchange for using our $16M. Pick up another future 1st. And then have space available in 2015.

This is what will happen. And the tank will go on for another year. This means three straight years with no playoffs and 4 out of 5 years with no playoffs. What a waste. We are the Timberwolves.

I don't think so

Since there is a salary floor, I think it likely we see Lindsey go after 1-2 very good FA's (or make trades involving our picks).

Interesting thought, but in my opinion this is very unlikely. More likely is similar to last offseason. I.e., the GS deal, accumulating assets in exchange for expiring contracts, and picking up a few filler vets with good attitude to fill in around new young core (old core, draft picks, Neto, plus or minus). Granted we do not have the same type of cap space so it will be a "mini" version of 2013 offseason.

strategy

We will be gunning to win in 2015/16, in the playoffs and clawing our way up the playoff ladder, you can count on that.

The only waste I see in this equation is last year, where we maintained mediocrity and did not adequately develop youth. They picked an "in between" strategy, which means you achieve everything average.

... And then have space available in 2015.
Unless the Jazz unload at least one of Gordo, Alec, Favs, or Kanter, this coming summer will likely be the Jazz's last summer with cap space for at least a few years.

If the Utah Jazz are committed to a stretch 4 and a vet, Spencer Hawes fulfills both roles.

Then find another team if it makes you so miserable. What happened to Boston after Bird, Lakers after Magic, Chicago after Jordan. MAJOR REBUILDING with years of losing. We were spoiled with 20 consecutive playoff years. How many other teams since 1980 have had that kind of run?

Jazz rebuilt quickly after Stockton, Malone and Hornacek retired/left. Had three non-playoff years but only one losing season. Then made it all the way to the WC Finals. Jazz suffered a major blow with the Deron/Sloan situation. Whether you blame Deron, Jerry or both, the Jazz were cruising at 27-13, well on pace for home court advantage and then collapsed. You can't rebuild in a season, but Utah rebounded the next year to make the playoffs, then "stumbled" to a 43-39 record last year, barely missing.

I have NO doubt the Jazz could have made the playoffs this year had they re-signed Millsap, Carroll, Foye and had Burke and any decent vet at the point. But then what? There is no cap room. There is no trade with GS for two additional 1st's. The 8th seed in the West is on pace to get the 21st pick. And everyone on the board would be complaining that Utah is locked into being a 2nd-tier playoff team for the next 5 seasons. Oh yes, with the contracts to the vets, kiss Kanter goodbye (granted, maybe not a bad concept now that we have hindsight). But Utah likely has to choose between Burks and Hayward. Can't pay everyone.

I, for one, believe the Jazz are a playoff contender next season. Jazz have had injuries (tankfully), they have a rookie PG struggling mightily. Godron is shooting at a career-low percentage. They have one of the worst coaches in the league who doesn't even understand how to stop the clock. They either have NO bench, or worsen a starting unit by having a couple of players come off the bench who probably should start.

Next season:
1. Corbin WILL be replaced
2. Expect a jump in play from Burke.
3. Expect Hayward to at least return to his career averages.
4. Burks, who experienced a break-out in mid-season, will get minutes from Day 1.
5. Both the bench and starting units will be better
...a. Jazz bring in two lottery picks (or make a trade with the GS pick).
...b. Jazz will upgrade behind Burke, whether that is Neto or another PG.
...c. Jazz likely sign 1-2 FA's. I'm guessing one is Marvin Williams. The second will either start or be a back-up wing.
6. Corbin is gone. The Jazz will run some kind of offensive and defensive system.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the totals below represent approximate salaries and cap holds for 2014/15. I got the holds for Kanter and Burks off of shamsports. Obviously, the draft picks are just estimates based on where I think the picks may fall this year and next. The corresponding amounts match up roughly to what the contracts may be, with 2nd year raises. Of course, I'll be off +/- but hopefully in the ballpark. I have also not taken into account any increase in the cap/tax levels for the next TWO years.

If correct, Jazz could have about $13M to spend in cap space. Since I'm no capologist (and I know you are well-versed) can they spend up to the cap as long as they account for cap holds and then exceed the cap if they then have to match offer sheets for their FA's? For example, LeBron signs with us for $12.8M and then the next day, Kanter signs an offer sheet for $9M and Burks signs an offer for $10M. Having already signed LeBron, can we match the offers to Kanter and Burks as RFA's and end up $7M over the cap, but still under the luxury tax to reatin Kanter and Burks?

I'm joking, of course, on LeBron, but the same principle: can the cap space be eaten up with offers to FA's and then exceeded if/when a RFA signs an offer sheet for more than the cap hold amount?

There are three futures to the Jazz right now:

1 - Get EXTREMELY lucky, win the lottery (a top 3 pick), walk away with Parker or Wiggins, fill in around them, in the playoffs next year and competing for titles in 2-3 years.

2 - Continue on the path we are on, get a 6-10 pick, fill in with vets around them, and spend the next 5-10 years reliving the Deron era (5-6 seed every year, losing in the second round).

3 - Continue on the path we are on, get a 6-10 pick, tank again, end up with a 8-10 pick and become Minnesota.

Utah was in a great position at the beginning of this year to do #1. They blew it, and might have set the franchise back 5-10 years.

For the record, im ok with situations 1 and 2.
A championship would be a dream come true, but if the jazz get back into the playoffs with young fun and exciting team and maybe make it to the western conference finals then that will make me happy........... I really enjoyed the deron, memo, boozer, ak years.

You forgot about a trip to the WC Finals.

Utah was never in a position to get the #1 pick (barring a season-ending injury to Burke and at least one other core player).

With path 3 there's also Indiana and Houston as blueprints...
I mean there's only so many franchise worthy talents in a draft. When other teams tank harder because they don't have any talent on their roster(Milwaukee, Philly) then they're most likely to get the big prize. At a lower spot you simply have to be more careful how to spend and find a sleeper. That's less likely to result in success and if it doesn't work out you might end up a bubble team a little longer because management waits for free agency/trade coup and if in a give time span that seems impossible you decide to ship out everyone and start from scratch.
Jazz wanted to surround a young gun with young vets. But since they screwed the coaching choice and also failed to keep certain bodies away from the court they are now more successful than the couch GM would like them to be in order to take the easier, less risky road.

How did they do that? Or do you also think Hornacek (or any other coach) would have thrown games? And what do you mean by a "couch GM?" You mean the one that got us 2 additional first and 2 additional seconds? Or do you mean the 30 GM's in the league who failed to trade ANY players for first rounders at the deadline? I mean if a starting center is worth 2 second-rounders and the only "name" player to go a the deadline is only worth an expiring, then CERTAINLY, two overpaid guys like Williams and Jefferson should have been easily traded for lottery picks! Yes, let's FIRE every single GM in the league. Major FAIL for all of them.

I can't believe all of you that thought Utah was ever going to be bad enough to land in the bottom-3 of the league.

Sorry for the confusion. Here is the 2015/16 outlook. I think we WILL have cap space after accounting for new contracts and the various cap holds. Cap space only disappears after Kanter and Burks are signed for more than their holds. GVC, please correct if I'm wrong under the new CBA rules.

Here is my calculation:

A couple of things:
1. The cap holds after the rookie contract are either 200% or 250% of the previous salary (Depends on the average league salary!)
2. At least 12 roster spots count against the cap. Free roster spots are charged with a cap hold of the league minimum.
3. 2nd round draft picks don't have a cap hold.

It is a strong possibility that the salary cap and the luxury tax treshold will increase a couple millions over the next years but I think we have to be activ after this season! This will give us the better financial flexibility to have a stronger roster.

Looks like you're right, although it'll depend on extensions for Alec and Kanter (if they're extended this summer). Also, are the 1st round rookie salaries 125% scale (the vast majority get 125% of the rookie scale)?

And yes, the Jazz could sign free agents with that cap space and then match an offer sheet (or offer a contract) to Alec/Kanter that takes them above the cap.

10 for Hayward is not very realistic in my opinion. As an RFA, an opposing team has to start the bidding at 12 if they hope we'll flinch. And if he gets no offers, there is no guarantee Hayward will just take 10 for 4. He'd be stupid not to, but he does have UFA as leverage, the Olympic phoniness, another year to play, and Lindsey might feel the need to go higher just to lock him in. I hope he doesn't.
