rondo and stockton's assist record

i went over rondo's stats and realised even if he breaks the assist record 14.5 apg
will it be impresive.
on a side note if he does it stockton avg 17.2ppg and 2.7steals. so far rondo has 11.4pgg and 2.2spg
That Stockton season is really impressive, but I don't think there is anyway in the world that Rondo could duplicate that given the current makeup of the Celtics. 1989-90 Stockton was an anomaly...setting a record for APG, while at the same time being his team's second leading scorer. That's the piece that Rondo doesn't have: while he can score, he's not called upon to be his team's second option.

In fact, as I look at Stockton's career stats, the next year might be even more impressive. His scoring stayed just as high, and assists declined only slightly, but he was able to maintain both in the year when Jeff Malone came to Utah and became the second option. Pretty amazing.

Rondo's at 13.8 APG, 11.2 APG over this last 5 and I'm willing to bet it's under 13 by season's end. The 24 assists against the Knicks (the team that everyone seems to have fluky phenomenal games against) gave that average quite a bump.

Stockton's alltime assist record is cemented in stone, and I think his single season assist total and average is pretty safe for the forseeable future.

Rondo won't break it

And for anyone concerned about Stocktons all time Assists being broken...you do realize that someone has to average 10.5 apg for 19 seasons...and that is basically 19 true seasons (albeit a shortened season and one injury filled season)...I don't think anyone will average that many for that long without being injured.

That record is nearly impossible to break with the current talent in the NBA.

Agree, the all-time assist record is Stockton's forever. Another way to put it into perspective, is take Steve Nash's highest single-season assist total. Nash would have to maintain that pace for over 17 seasons to surpass Stockton.

As far as the single-season assist record, only 3 players have ever surpassed 1,000 assists in a season. Isiah Thomas and Kevin Porter once each. Stockton did it 7 times. Don't see anyone approaching that territory either.

If my fav player growing up Magic Johnson wouldnt have been ran out of the nba from D*cks like Karl Malone he would have the record

Pretty sure he was ran out of the league by what he did with his OWN di....uh...member.

That said, Magic still would not have ended where Stock did. No way he would have played 16 seasons (what he needed at his career avg to hit close to Stock). He had his rings and the Lake-show was beginning to fade in the late 80's and into the 90's.

Stock's records will stand, if not forever, at least for a very very long time. 20 year point guards are just not an everyday occurrence, especially any with even close to that level of skill.

On an aside, does anyone else feel like the assist that put Stockton number one all time was a bit flaky? That dribble Karl Malone did kind of made it a shot he created for himself. I mean. I was super excited when it happened. Buuuuuut, really. Was that actually really an assist?

Eh, I dunno. I guess I always wished it was more pure assist.

Yeah... we should cut them some slack. The NBA was FAR bloodier back then.

Magic Johnson ran himself out of the league with his own "D*ck".

P.S. Duck?

yes his d8ick got him th ehiv but then a guy with no knowledge started complaing9See Karl Malone) I know yall like Karl and his game but lets seperate the 2. As a player he was great as a human beibng he is a p.o.s. I mean he knocked up a 13 year old and then told the kid after he was older that he has done fine without him so they dont need a relationship. Like michael jackson i liked his music but thats where it ends cuz he is a cho..
