What type of asset is Hayward?

I will be shocked if he gets a $12 million contract and very PISSED if the Jazz match. Seriously, you have to be pretty dumb GM to think that you can't replace Gordon for less than 12 million.

If the Jazz bring Hayward back for 12 per, then Lindsay probably isn't as smart as we are all hoping.

Yes. And once an offer is made and matched, he cannot be dealt to that same team. So unless the team is ABSOLUTELY certain Utah would not match - and that likely means vastly overpaying since there really isn't a poison pill a team could put in (like Houston did with Lin), a trade is really the only option.

This is an interesting caveat. So, if you are Boston, and you know that you could get Hayward to resign at 10 per, you have every bit of motivation to get a trade done. Because the only other way to get him is to give out an awful deal, and hope Utah doesn't match, when they can.

I think the Jazz will keep Hayward and move him to SF assuming they can put more talent around him. He's at least a Danilo Gallinari-caliber player. It would take a pretty sweet offer for the Jazz to move him, imo.

Take Boston for example if Ainge really think this class is weak and they really love Hayward they may have been interested in a trade involving their pick. Having Gordon as a RFA would have given Lindsey leverage as he could always keep Gordon.

IMO trading a player before they hit RFA gives the team trading the player more leverage.

I'm 100% sure that every GM in the league knew that Philly was gonna sell off everything but the cheesesteak. That effectively hammered the in-season tradability for a guy like Gordon. Who would buy Gordon for $50 when they can get Turner for $5?

When I think about Hayward with any amount of clarity in my head, I realize how much a team like San Antonio would love to have him. That makes me like Hayward for $10million/yr.

Can we really move him though? I'm not sure what the rules are with RFA. He is a lot less valuable as a RFA, because teams know they can just wait and grab him. Can you move him and the GSW pick for a lottery pick?

He's not officially a FA till the first of July, which is after the draft I believe, so you should be able to use him for trades.

Why would anyone trade for him? If they really wanted him couldn't they just sign him?

If more than one team wants him, for example we've all heard in the past that both Boston and Phenix like him a lot... If Phenix is worried Hayward wants to play for Stevens again, Phenix might think that trading for him is the only way they can sign him. If Boston hears the rumors of this they might be enticed to try to deal for him to keep Phenix from getting him.

This is why they may not leave it to chance that they can just wait and sign him in Freeagency.

Last summer I was good with Hayward getting $10 million, ok with him getting $11 million, but thought $12 million was too much for his talent. But after the way he performed this season, I'm thinking we should walk away from any offer over $10 million.

I disagree. We are in a completely different set of circumstances than San Antonio. San Antonio is trying to win a title now. We are trying to lose. If San Antonio wants Hayward for 11 per because he can increase their wins by 5 games, fantastic. By the same token, if we are going to "tank" again next year, wouldn't Hayward at 11 per, +5 wins really hurt the Jazz?
