As of last season I had always envisioned him as our 6th man, but after the 2nd half of this season, I think we have to start him. Forget the highlight reel drives and finishes, his ability to get into the lane - and more importantly - get to the free throw line he displayed the 2nd half of this season was nothing short of phenomenal. Perhaps he'll never be a real dangerous threat from three-point land, although he has shown improvement in his stroke, but his mid-range game really developed this year as well. I'd like to see him add wrinkles in the mid-range with pull-ups/floaters.

All that being said, I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him off the bench as the 6th man (depending on who we draft). Win-win.

*disclaimer* I checked the first three pages for this thread topic and couldn't find it, so apologies if this has already been addressed ad nausea.
 
I think he'd be a very capable starter, but if we have the offseason I'm hoping for I'd prefer him off the bench. If we get into the lottery and get Jabari or Wiggins I'd love to roll with this line-up:

Burke
Hayward
Wiggins/Parker
Favors
Kanter

6th: Burks

My sincere apologies for wasting some space on the internet. I will be more conscientious about the problems it may cause next time I think of starting a thread about the breakout player of this year's Jazz team.
 
I think burks is good enough to be a starter but the 6th man role may be best for him and the team if we draft a scorer or pick one up in free agency.

This year would have been perfect to start him since the starting lineup was basically 4 outside shooters and favors.
That lineup sorely needed what burks does best
 
Depends on the draft, whether Gordo stays and the rest of free agency. Starting Burke-Burks-Gordo on the perimeter will put a ridiculous amount of pressure on Favors defensively. Ideally, you have at least one defender who can handle physical/athletic wing players. As long as Gordo and Alec are both on the team, one should probably come off the bench, unless the Jazz fail to find a passable perimeter defender who can knock down open shots (RJ doesn't count, as his defense was brutal this season).

I have to imagine a post so ridiculous is a troll, but I'll use the comment as an opportunity to give Burks a little love.

Burks ranks 6th among all shooting guards in FG%. And 6th among SGs in PPS. He's the youngest SG in the top 10 on both lists.

Again, I don't think most Jazz fans realize just how lucky they are to have a guy like Burks playing so well, not only at a young age, but very little experience.

2 questions

1. Is field goal percentage garbage?
2. is it generally better to be in the top 10 in PPS or the bottom 10?


I wonder if lebron, durant, curry, harden, melo, etc have high or low PPS.

Help me understand why you think it's garbage. I've always liked it as a stat that gives credit to guys who shoot a good FG%, 3pt FG% and get to the FT line.
The top non-centers in the league in PPS are, in order: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Blake Griffin and Kevin Love. One could argue those are the best 5 players in the NBA. PPS does a pretty damn good job in identifying those players.

I think it's the most accurate metric there is if you filter for ppg and take out three point specialists. Even using it for three point specialists, it shows just how freaking dangerous Kyle Korver is.

It also shows how highly overrated Melo is and why he can't lead squat to a ****.
 
I'm high on Burks. In a perfect world, though, I see him coming off the bench next season and (hopefully) beyond. Perfect world being the following:

1. We end up with Wiggins or Parker
2. Kanter solidifies himself as (at least) a solid starter. I think we'll see a better Kanter next season that is fully healthy and in great shape.
3. The Core 5 stays relatively healthy.

Just give that top 8/9 time to jell and look out world. Burks could be our instant offense off the bench. A la Ginobili or Jamal Crawford.

You've got to be ****ing kidding me. It counts shooting fouls drawn as 0 possessions used. As such, it overvalues players who draw fouls. TS% is better; points-per-possession better still. If you think TS% undervalues shooting fouls, you can adjust the multiplier on free throws in the denominator (in TS%, 2 free throw attempts are the equivalent of .88 field goal attempts...in PPS, 2 free throw attempts are the equivalent of 0 field goal attempts).

Sorry, I was being a moran and actually thinking of TS% for some reason (if you apply what I said to TS% it should actually make some sense). I learned long ago that questioning you on this stuff generally makes me look like a moran.
