Position names don't matter. Gordon can defend 3's, so he can play the 3. If you have a stretch big man who can extend defenses, you can afford to play Gordon. If we have Kanter shooting 3's, having Gordon not being a 3pt shooter right away isn't a huge deal.
I think a general rule of thumb is you want 3 shooters on the floor at all times, you can get away with 2 and having 4 is great if the defense is up to par, but 3 is the number all teams should strive for.
