KOC, Let's Make A Deal

I am worried that KOC's phone has dust on it and maybe a few spiderwebs. If the goal is "just be competitive", then don't make any deals. But, if we want to go deep into the playoffs, we need to bring in a strong 2. Our front line is undersized and our rebounding is atrocious.

I worry that the early success of this season is fools gold and makes the organization feel they don't need to look at any deals. I know that NBA trades are complicated and matching up salaries is rough, but I think we have a few options with AK's expiring contract.

The Jazz need to somehow package Memo, AJ, AK, Raja, Hayward and Tomic for Bogut, Jax, Crash and Demarcus Cousins. That would be awesome.

Jazz basically burned all of their meaningful assets this summer. They have a group of players they won't trade, Memo (who might be a chip next year), a terrible rookie, and an expiring that's too big. I don't think Tomic has any value except as a throw-in and I wouldn't trade Evans. And then a bunch of old guys.

Considering how much more important chemistry is for the Jazz than other teams, they're going to be especially wary of trading since we haven't exactly seen what this team can do. 30 games is a significant sample size, but the team's play - both good and bad - is anything but set in stone.

Hate to take this side, but except for some smaller deals, the Jazz should probably just stay the course. Jefferson might turn into a man and Miles and/or Hayward might turn into something.

Orlando will need a C unless Orton isn't a total dope, which he appeared to be last time I checked. I'm actually pretty bummed the Jazz didn't find a way to get Gortat. I think that guy's a very legit player.

Anyway, your post actually has some merit. With Nelson, Arenas, Richardson, and Redick there, ONE of those guys has to be on the block. To me, Redick seems the odd man out.

I agree with this. I would not mind if they packaged Raja and Price to get a starting quality 2 guard. However they probably can't get a deal done for that so might as well stay the course.

Like mentioned above, what do the Jazz really have to trade in the first place?

They have no picks in the coming up draft, 2013 is too far away to trade that pick, their second rounder in 2012 will likely be 40 or higher. Tomic may have some value, but only to a team looking to shed salary, than you have the whole thing with the Jazz already being into the luxary tax. So other than a cap dump I just don't see this team making moves.

Also, it's not like the Jazz have been total crap this season. They're 10 games above 500 after a pretty difficult schedule to start the season.

Agreed great post. Jazz shouldn't panic yet just because we might not be contenders in the west. We don't know how Okur will help the team. Lots of things that need to be worked out. But for sure he should be making calls to people who are available to find out what teams are asking for.

JJ on our team would make the Jazz so White, we would win because we would blind our opponents with our whitness. They wouldnt be able to see anything. The arena lights shining off Fesenko, JJ, Kirilenko, Hayward, Okur, and Sloan would be enough to make 15/20 vision eyes loose their eye sight. Not to mention all the Pasty White fans we have packed inside of the E/S arena.

The Jazz are about 7 million over the tax. They have very little chance of getting under, but they'd undoubtedly like to limit the hit. That basically means only Okur and AK are chips. As per the CBA, an AK deal can theoretically save 4.5 million if a another team only gave back 75% in salary. I can see a move like that so long as the pieces coming back wouldn't make the team weaker. Those deals are hard to construct, though.

I'll bet non-contenders with Cap Space looking to foist contracts will ring up KOC. Like a NJ Outlaw/Vujacic for AK swap that only sends out 12 plus in salary (awful). After that, guys like Iggy and Deng will be floated in millions of trade discussions. Caron Butler could get dangled. Or any decent player owed salary a team doesn't want to be married to could enter the discussion. But I'm not saying KOC should make those deals.
