With teams positioning themselves to get Love or one of the key FAs, if DL strikes quickly, some of the team options may not be able to get exercised by the team since it could blow their cap space for going after LeBron. Some of these teams might be in paralysis and we can maybe get a good piece of the puzzle for our team. It might cost us a little overvaluing a player but we can maybe get a good player.

Man, I feel like I am in the middle of a chess match with DL. How many moves is he planning ahead of the competition?

  • For example Houston and Parsons. If we ultimately decide we can't get Wiggins or Parker and have to stay at #5, do we make an attempt at Parsons and Houston can't match due to hoping for LeBron?
  • If he can trade up to the #1 pick DL takes _____________ (fill in the blank)
  • If he can't get the #1 pick, try to get one of the top 3?
  • If he has to stay at the #5 pick, who does he take?
  • If at #5 pick the best player is someone he can get a couple of picks lower, does he try to trade down?

Which is usually followed up by overreacting.

Teams are going to try to clear the decks for a run at LEbron.

Players like Parsons will have to wait until the Decision II is done. Because teams wont want to tie up thier cap space and a bandwagoner like Parsons wants to wait to see if he has a chance to play with LEbron.

After LebRon's Decision II, teams that cleared the decks for LebrOn but came up empty will overpay lesser talent, like Monroe, Parsons, and Hayward, just to make an impact with their fans.

It is going to be a crazy summer.

Parsons said in an interview once that the toughest player to guard in the league is Lebron James.
 
Also, if a team matches an offer, is there a trade restriction in place until December like there is with newly acquired FA's? I know a team matching an offer sheet is prohibited from then negotiating a S&T with the offering team.

I think the best scenario for Utah is to just step in as a facilitator in return for future assets like they did with GS and Iggy.

This. Especially since it's clear that DL wants to accumulate assets to make a big move at some point. The more assets (and better the assets are) the better positioned you are to make a deal. The problem then becomes convincing them to stay in Utah.

  • If he can't get the #1 pick, try to get one of the top 3? Yes there are more options at the #3 pick but not if it cost too much. I don't see a huge difference between 3 and 5 unless you are in love with Exum.
  • If he has to stay at the #5 pick, who does he take? Depends on who is there. Gordon or Exum for me.
  • If at #5 pick the best player is someone he can get a couple of picks lower, does he try to trade down?

I think it all depends on the way the draft goes down. Teams will be making last second decisions due to the Embiid injury.
 
It would be I really awesome to take on some bulls contracts for their two teen picks that way we can use them to land #1 pick!!!!
 
If the Cavs trade fell over i'm cool with going after Lakers pick using our cap space plus Burkes or Kanter.

In the midst of all the confusion, the NBA office discovers that the trade documents mistakenly send Lebron to Utah, with salaries and picks going to the Lakers. Since they have been signed by all parties, LBJ has to report or forfeit his $20M per season.




....And then I woke up. :D

Except for the fact that it's freaking Utah. . .

The funny thing is that I'm pretty sure that this is the only place that can offer him a Max contract without shuffling pieces and still offer 6 young lottery picks to put around him (or use as assets to lure another star player). Getting LeBron James to go anywhere immediately makes that team a desirable location for other players to end up. Unfortunately, Utah will likely be an afterthought in the free agency process. The tricky part moving forward for the Millers and DL is to change that image.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure that just a few short years ago Golden State and Houston were NOT places that would be high on a free agent's wish list. Now they seem to be thought of pretty highly - if they can make the cap space work.
 
If Lebron likes Akron Ohio enough that his wife tweeted this week about "Home Sweet Home" since they were going back for the offseason, then certainly Salt Lake City is a step up from there and would be OK. :)

EDIT: yes I know he probably isn't coming
