Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

I find it noteworthy that in his post-draft interviews DL never mentioned Hayward. But on multiple times he mentioned Alec Burks. He once said Trey - Exum - Burks will form a unique 3-man rotation. I am guessing he means giving like 32-32-32 mpg for each guy, going with Trey - Burks, Trey - Exum and Exum - Burks backcourts throughout the game.

On other occasions, Jazz FO has said they want and expect Hayward to be with the organization for his entire career. But I do agree it was noticeable what was said about Trey, Exum and Burks. Of course, they've also said Neto is an important part of their plans. SO I have to think Hayward is moving to SF. Not that big a change, really, because Corbin finally started playing Hayward and Burks together the last part of the season. Once Hayward is re-signed, I think Lindsey will feel the rebuild is about complete from the 1-2-3 standpoint. All that remains is player development and bringing Neto over next year to replace JLIII.

The 4-5 is still in flux. Kanter needs to step up and claim a starting spot. Or they bring in a stretch-4 and Kanter becomes expendable. And Gobert needs to develop into a solid backup (which I think he will).

Does that mean we can bring Raja back with Hayward's spot?

I wonder if the CBA allows the Jazz to pay Hayward in gum? Nobody ever pays me in gum.

The failure was low balling Millsap to begin with. They had to match him because they had already lost Matthews because they let him go on the free market. That is my point either the Jazz are bad negotiators and don't know the value of their players or Jazz players think they are worth more than they are. There is probably truth to both sides but in the end you take a bigger chance of overpaying if you let your guy go on the market. You are right nobody knows what Hayward wanted but it doesn't matter really because the organization should have their own pricing tier. THis is how much we are willing to spend...

I see a lot of "pay hayward the Max" supporters dismiss AK's contract as not the same. I disagree, AK's contract kept the Jazz from bringing in other FAs and the Jazz were unable to match the Matthews deal because of his contract. While the amount won't be the same, the concern is the same. If you Max out or grossly overpay a player it will eventually come back and bite you in several ways. The Jazz need to be smart and not act emotionally. Hayward is replaceable. He is not Stockton or Malone.

I just wanted to correct this and point out that Millsap's contract situation was the BEFORE Mathews... because I'm a dick like that.

What about Defense?

Whos guarding the best offensive player on the other team with the way the roster is constructed currently?

Mike Harris was guarding Kevin Durant to start the season last year..

you're ok with that?

Call me crazy but I think the Jazz have a deficiency in perimeter defense, the stats affirm this.

Many wanted to target a Defensive minded Forward at pick #5.

He just turned 29, days ago. A 3 year deal is fine, he just had his best year and would be the only player on the Jazz with championship experience.

41% from 3 on 5.7 attempts, he'd lead the Jazz in steals, and brings plenty of toughness.

If you are talking about the season opener, if you remember everybody was in foul trouble (KD had around 20FT's that game) so Harris was the last guy left with fouls to guard him. As the Jazz had to protect everyone else (not just Hayward) so there would be somebody that could still be at least a scoring threat of some kind.

If the Jazz have Exum, Burks, and Burke, where is Hayward going to get minutes as a 2 (provided that Exum is NBA-ready, and Burke/Burks don't get worse)?

Please do not over pay hayward. Chandler parsons, Trevor ariza and Gordon hayward are all very similar players. The rumors I read say ariza may get 8-10 a year, Parsons 9-11, and people on this board think hayward may get 12-14. The jazz should offer all three 9 million per. The first to accept wins. If nobody accepts offer 10 per year. If hayward isnt the first to accept, look for a sign a trade. Ariza at 9 million is better than hayward at 13.

.407 shooting 3's last season on 5.7 attempts per.

Impressive.
Ariza is a better shooter and defender than hayward. Hayward is a better creator and ball handler.

With burks, exum, and burke i think that arizas shooting and defense outweighs haywards ballhandling and passing

Ariza is 29. Hayward is 24. By the time Jazz need somebody at that position to be really good, Ariza will be out of the league.
Good point
