Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

And then we let them walk because another team wants to overpay them and we don't think they're worth it. So we finish with 25 wins this season and next and the one after. We can always afford to let players go because we're tanking for a lottery pick.

No, we let them walk because we spent too much money for Hayward and can't afford them. Wes Matthews all over again.

All of these numbers for Gordon from the very beginning have been speculation.
The 4 year 50 mil offer from Jazz was never confirmed.
This offer from Cavs is just speculation.
In the end it will turn out to be a reasonable contract that he signs from somebody.
The NBA supposedly fought hard to prevent overspending.
No team would ever offer him these kind of numbers.

Will be shocked if he really gets any of these outrageous numbers.

This depends on how much the cap increases over the first 4 years of the hypothetical max contract.

Fair, but the Jazz can't start the new deal higher than 14.8 right? So if they flatten out the numbers (with a few raises mixed in), they'll still have a hard time getting to the number in year 5 that Gordon's new MAX deal as an FA would reach in what is projected to be a substantially higher cap.

I'm guessing the solution might be a signing bonus, but I really don't know how that would work. I really don't want to see the Jazz get too creative in trying to overpay him, but I'm wondering what the enticement might be beyond hoping for a little hometown discount.

Certainty. Gordo gets more guaranteed dollars. I'd be surprised if Gordo makes a big enough jump to get a max contract in 4 years. It's insane that there's any discussion about him getting the max now.

Hayward getting a max contract feels like an episode of the twilight zone. If the jazz match a max contract it could be my worst nightmare.

Neither of those players are better than Gordon or make the team better in any way. It's not even a sideways step. It's a step back.
I disagree.

I think the difference between hayward or ariza or parsons is a win or two

Dubious

This makes little financial sense for Hayward because he's giving up a year of free agency. At the end of a 4 year MAX he's 28 and signs a second MAX deal at a much higher number in year 5. In the Jazz scenario, he's making substantially less in year 5, and he's 29 looking for his next MAX deal.

You are assuming that Hayward earns another max deal? Very dubious assumption. He could blow out a knee, show low durability, prove to be mediocre, or prove to not be a superstar worthy of another max deal. I'd put the odds at <20%.

There are many scenarios where a 5-year deal makes more financial sense for Hayward. It definitely raises the "floor" on the amount he can make over his career. Would you be interested in a guaranteed $6M?
