Open Practice Review

I just got to the bar from the open practice.

- Coach Q (badass nickname) was so refreshing. He treated the fans like adults and actually talked basketball. Wow, at least he'll explain things in detail.

- Dante Exum showed flashes but he got tired fast. Some nice passes and is fast. But you can tell he has some work to do. His shooting needs serious work, but his vision and speed are as advertised. I'm cautiously excited.

- Rodney Hood. Dude is ready. He'll contribute on this team right away. I saw NBA ready moves. His shot was a bit off, but you can tell he can play now.

- Trey Burke. I like his game. He'll be better this year. Book it. By far the most impressive, Hood a close second.

- Ruuuudy! Looked huge as usual. Coach commented on his passing.

- I love Ian Clarke. He has a great smile.

- I hope we bring back Malcolm Thomas and the other stretch 4/5 white dude (I'm drunk).

Not a whole lot to take from the scrimmage. But it was a good time and the crowd was huge.

Also, Simogi (sp?) is very big. All the other guys were meh.

Good to know the crowd was huge. I hope the ESA goes back to being a top-5 attendance.
Yes. It was packed.... almost every seat in the lower bowl was filled.

It was a great time. Fun to see the young'uns (Snyder included)
Exum was gassed earlier than most... Conditioning? Altitude? Either way he will get better with time.
Loved Hood! Make them respect the 3.. Then head fake and take it to the rim. Good stuff!
Burke looked better then anyone else, and he better as the only established NBA starter in a group of kids that most won't ever play an NBA game.
I saw one thing they need to work out... A few times the opposing team scored and Exum and Burke were the only two players on their end of the court. They were looking at each other like, "I'm the PG, you take it out." "No, I'm the PG. You pass it in to me." After a few awkward seconds Burke stepped out and in-bounded it to Dante. Trey wasn't smiling... They better get those bigs to in-bound and decide who stays back to take the pass...
On missed shots they looked more natural. Burke on one side and Dante on the other. Whoever got the rebound looked to the edge and had one or the other to pass it to. Smooth mostly.

Alot of fun.
Roll on summer league!

So sad I couldn't go. From twitter I see the crowd was just below 10,000. Players were surprised.

Tony Jones from the Tribune was raving about Hood, says he is nba ready today.

Favors is going to be a local hero if he is not careful. He showed up in the arena to watch, sat with the fans and paused to sign an autograph. He has been working out with the rookies all week. Favors was the first player Coach Q called after he got the job.

Speaking of coach Q, he expressed amazement over the crowd that turned out to watch basketball practice. He said he has met lots of fans and hopes that everyone is just as nice at mid season.

My review.

Exum was about as bad as he could be. he airballed two shots (on one, the step back 18 footer, the whole crowd groaned) and barely hit the rim on a few others. Even almost airballed a free throw. He did almost make an open 3 though. The defense even sagged off him one time and he got the ball for an open 3 from the wing and barely got rim.
His defense was pretty good and he takes some risks playing passing lanes. One time he stole the inbounds pass after his team scored.
He has a few decent passes. If i had to guess his shooting, it was probably something like 1-8 from the field (0-2 from 3). I think he scored off that inbounds steal and that was it. Probably had 3 assists a steal and a couple rebounds (all just guesses)

Trey burke
He shot poorly too (he shoots too late into his jump) probably like 3-10 or something. He did hit a corner three and had an and one on a nice drive.
He looked good out there as far as leading the team, setting up the offense and handling the ball. He got swatted twice that i remember (one of them he burned the perimeter defense and then the tall white dude stuffed him at the rim). Played mostly poor defense

Rodney hood
I hated the rodney hood pick but now have done a complete 180. His jumpshot is a thing of beauty (so long bradley beal mancrush) he is WAY more athletic than i thought he was. His defense was quite bad though. He was probably like 5-8 from the field or something. Hit a three, a couple midrange shots, had a very nice drive and double clutch finish, and a breakaway dunk.

Rudy Gobert
Man was i impressed by him. In warmups he was having so much fun and goofing off and every dunk he was trying to break the backboard.
Then the game started and he just flipped a switch. All business. He plays mean, nasty, ferocious bball and i love it.
His help defense was out of this world. Hood or trey would get beat and he would be right there to stop the ball handler and then when that guy passed rudy would haul *** back to his man.
He probably had like 15 defensive rebounds and a couple offensive. Every defensive rebound was his. He only blocked a few shots but altered alot more and like i said his help defense was really good. Offensively he did very little but he did have 3 assists and some other nice passes. (One of his assists was unbeleivable) he had a breakaway dunk, that was soooo powerful and flashy and he had to take a few dribble first (caught the ball around half court) he had another play where he got the ball on the baseline about 8 feet out and took 2 steps and elevated. Murphy (tall white dude) tried to go up for the block but rudy was coming with alot of height and power. So murphy just tried to grab both if rudys arms and hold on for dear life without getting killed. Rudy almost made the dunk and almost put murphy through the hoop.

I loved everything about coach snyder.

I was really impresses with brad jones and how hard he was working and how much coaching he was doing. very enthusiastic.

Favors showed up and sat behind the bench which was cool of him and snyder acknowledged favors and said that favors was the first one to talk to quin when he got the job.

The teams were set up with gobert, burke, exum, hood, and thomas all on one team. (Thomas looked good too)
The other team was scrubs and clarke. So it seemed like the teams were set up so that exum burke hood and gobert would be able to dominate against the scrubs and impress the fans

So, was their a scrimmage? Which team won?
Yes and idk

Edit: white team won (burke, exum, gobert, thomas, hood team) 37-33 i think. (3 eight minute periods)

I didnt even know that alec, derrick, and enes were not gonna play lol. I probably would not have went if i would have known. Im glad i went though..... it was lots of fun

Well if Hood is ready for minutes than I really don't want to pay Hayward. Sign a vet to back up Hood and let Rodney start.

Fish, great recap. The only thing I'd add is that a few of Exum's passes were fairly off, his teammates had to stretch unnaturally to get them. It seemed to happen most when Exum was passing over the top of his defender.

Afterward Exum still seemed a little flustered/overwhelmed when signing autographs and Ian Clark told me he's going to get the MVP again this year, "got to stay undefeated."
