Should They Match?

Have Jazz FO confirmed they will match this contract?

Not that I am aware.

All the local reporters and Locke said the Jazz have said they will match.

There is a layer there.

I hope Jazz are doing due diligence and creating a plan if they decide not to match...

I am not 100% convinced we are matching.....

Lebron anyone :)

I voted no. That being said, I have to put my faith into DL that he is making the right decision by matching(which I believe he will do). No reason for me to get mad about it when it happens. I will just hope for the best.
Good post

Hopefully after we match we will all get over it and move on and support hayward

I've found this thing on the internet. Found it very informative. Not positing it to antagonize, not do I want to make a statement. Just a piece of information.

After reading opinions on both sides of the issue including smart guys like Lowe/Pelton who seem to think the smartest course of action is to match, I still think the Jazz should let Hayward walk. To me the bottom line is the Jazz will have $60-$80MM per year depending on the cap/tax line to buy as much value as possible. Using $15MM of that space to pay Hayward more than he's worth just means the remaining $45-$65MM has to be spent that much more wisely to create the surplus value necessary to make the Jazz contenders. The easiest way to generate surplus value is to have a megastar like LeBron, KD, etc. who is worth way more than his max contract slot. The Jazz don't look to have a player of that caliber right now, so they're already a bit behind the 8-ball--they need to spend their resources even more wisely to make up that gap, not throw away a few extra million per year b/c they're afraid of losing an asset "for nothing."

Relatedly, the losing Hayward "for nothing" argument also rings hollow to me. It ignores the idea of opportunity cost. That is, the $15MM the Jazz would spend on Hayward could also be spent in innumerable other ways--everything from renting out the cap space for assets, to doing what Dallas did last year and signing mid-level FAs like Ellis and Calderon. Some of those ideas could prove better than ponying up the cash for Hayward; others could prove worse.

To me the bottom line is that I don't think there's any chance Hayward is the smartest possible use of $15MM dollars. As a small market team, it's imperative that Utah make every dollar count, both in the present and going forward. I'd prefer that they take a chance in either trying to fill out the roster with other, cheaper FAs and/or renting out the remaining space rather than settle for the safe, but 99% likely to be mediocre outcome of paying Hayward the max.

All of that said, I like Hayward both as a person and as a player. If he winds up back in Utah, I will hope he proves the above analysis wrong and if he goes to Charlotte, I will wish him nothing but the best.

Nice post. I agree 100 percent. I just looked at some stats and Hayward is ranked the 11th best scoring SG on ESPN stats. This is based upon his scoring average. #13 is Gerald Green who is being paid $3.5 million dollars with one year on his contract. He plays 10 minutes less than Hayward so with the additional playing time he would score more than Hayward. He is a guy who I've wanted the Jazz to look at several times he has become a FA. Can create his own shot and can play SG/SF. What jumped out to me was his shooting percentages. It seems like he has learned to play the game instead of just being a dunker. He would be great in a run and gun type offense. Shot .400 from 3pt and is an excellent FT shooter.

I would love it if the Jazz were able to work a deal with the Suns, draft picks or target him next year when he becomes a FA. The crazy money which we are thinking about paying Hayward can be better used on multiple players than on one player. Green is a perfect example of this. Green/Hood at he SF position would be exciting to see.

You know that isn't going to happen especially if Hayward shows up and says he always wanted to be here and then starts clanking shots. The only way this goes away is if Hayward exceeds expectations and actually plays like a max guy which I doubt he will.

Unfortunately, the Jazz painted themselves into a corner but I hope they have sense enough to realize that they can still change their minds. I will be shocked if they DON"T match because no matter who is running the show it seems the Jazz still don't know how to negotiate contracts. Part of a rebuild is clear out the roster check, drafting well check, but just as important is evaluating your players value to the team and getting the player to agree, while right now this is an incomplete it is looking like a big failure.

So 40% of the voters agree that Jazz have to pay Hayward more than LaMarcus Aldridge, Harden, Westbrook and the same as Kevin Love, Marc Gasol and Paul George? No comment! Hayward is nobody compared to all these players.

Kinda a kick to the nuts of Favors. Is Hayward worth making him feel like a chump? Seattle gave Jim McIlvane a huge payday and Kemp wanted out because of it. Maybe countless child support suits against him too. The very least Jimmy could have done was help out with some of those payments. Selfish!

How is this a kick in the nuts to Favors? Gordon and his agent looked at the landscape and gambled... That gamble paid off... The only one who needs nut kicking is favors agent.

Just shows how unconscious you are about the tone you're setting the way you engage into conversation with me. Now that you're seeing your mistakes you try to change the topic. NIce try, lawyer.

So show me a team with real cap space that's shown willingness to compete right away.

So now you're moving the goalposts to suit the position you want to defend. A message board classic.

I don't think it's helpful to continue down this path. I don't even really know who you are so I'm not getting much juice out of it.

That the bottom line is Hayward is getting paid a good amount more. The message sent is that if you want to be a team player, thanks! Now we can overpay a player who unlike you, his stats are progressively getting worse. Keep up the team spirit!
Instead, it could be: Thanks for saving us some cap space, we'll be appreciative and surround you with good players deserving of the $ you allowed us to work with.
Or even the message Hayward is sending to the team. Me first. There's some good examples of players taking less to field a good team.

Don't skip any steps.

Let the inefficient guy go when he is offered too much by another team. Bringing him back on that contract will have a ripple effect through your other young players. The spotlight was on him last season and he mostly shrunk. What will it be like when the 15 million dollar spotlight is shined on him and 12 -13 of his teammates are staring at him too.

Jazz have sucked this long, and are going to suck for the foreseeable future, no need to make it worse by this. Let it go.

When favors signed his deal it wasn't because he's a team player... His agent looked at the risk of injury or poor play and said this deal gives us enough. He didn't say I can sign for the max or take less money and be a team player.

Imagine if Gordon had blown up his knee last year... How much money would he have lost? He gambled and won... Favors took the safe route ( which I would have done as well... I'm not criticizing him). Even if you hate the contract all the Gordon isn't a team player because he is taking the money stuff has to stop... Had the jazz offered favors the max he would have taken it.
