What's new

Dante Exum everybody!

I'm just going to play devil's advocate for a second. I watched the game and was blown away by this kid's first step, speed, iq, etcetera, too. However, and this is just a however to temper our emotions because we all clearly feel like it's Christmas morning, it's one summer league game and I would like to see him do this consistently in SL. How many times have we seen a guy look really good in a SL game only to come back and look like a steaming pile the next game?

I know, I know, I'm poo-pooing on our parade. I'm just saying let's have a little perspective.

Now, that said, this kid could be ****ing awesome and we need to hire Engelland at 1M per year next off-season if we have to because his shooting and the rest of the squads really needs to improve.

I think that's fair. Also, the roster Philly threw out there was like a JV Summer league team. Having said that, over the course of the rest of SL and then the FIBA World Cup, I think we'll get a pretty decent idea of what we'll see from Exum this year. I just hope Australia plays him big minutes. Maybe we'll have to root for a Dellavedova sprained ankle or something.

Im 100% drinking the koolaid now.

I had reservations when we drafted him and then after the scrimmage.... but no more.

He needs to improve his handles and i dont think he will ever be a great shooter, but i dont think he needs to be.

Top 5 point guard in the league by the end of his rookie deal

No, I did not watch the SL match. Was Trey that bad? I don't care about SL matches but it's disappointing if he is out of shape. This year is big for him. That being said, I saw him play last year, he is a legit PG in the NBA already with that speed and heart. I believe he will be an all-star one day.

Speed and trey Burke should never be mentioned in the same sentence. And yes, he was that bad.

Well since this hype machine is going strong, just want to throw out Kobe shot 41% as a rookie so there is hope ;)

Rookie Seasons
Westbrook: 39.8%/27.1%/81.5%
Parker: 41.9%/32.3%/67.5%
Conley: 42.8%/33.0%/73.2%

I can live with 40/28/65 considering he's barely played in the last year, his age, he has a larger learning curve than most based on his competition, and his surrounding cast isn't exactly a who's who of future Hall of Famers.

Edit: I'd really love to see 70+% from the line though. That would give me hope that he has some ability to shoot.

Brutal.

I dont think anyone was more critical of Burke's athleticism than me in the '13 Potential Draftee's thread, I try to avoid the topic and give him the benefit of the doubt these days, as im hopeful. Seeing this slow stuff in SL makes me very nervous, I know he could return the Jazz serviceable assets in trade, I hope thats still the case by the Deadline and the end of the season.

Wow what a grumpy old fart you sound like. Come on Core. It's a summer league game. This was pretty fun overall actually.

Sounds like you expected something more from a SL game you are never going to get.

It wasn't a good game to watch overall, but mainly because the refs wouldn't stop blowing their whistles on what seemed like every play. I think it took both teams out of their limited offensive flow.

For the record, I didn't mean to LIKE this post. I was gonna suggest bifocals.

The big thing that stood out to me about Exum was his "killer instinct". When he made that bad pass then went and got the steal and went in hard for the dunk. I saw something I haven't seen in a Jazz player since DWill. Made a mistake and was pissed at himself and went ape sh**. Loved it.

Quite excited to see what kind of plays they come up with on that back-court duo with burk/exum or burks/exum. We've got a pretty athletic young team now, so if we can take advantage there I will be very entertained this year.

I still feel like Burke plays slower than he is actually physically slow. Still feel like he is stuck with the 35 second shot clock style of holding the ball too long.

Burke did have a nice cross-over into the lane for an And-1 floater where his defender fell down trying to guard him.

I loved his alley oop to Exum from deep. That was a great pass. He has talent, but it really looked like Exum was operating on a whole different level. I think that Burke off the bench has a chance to be very, very good. He'll increase his pace. Snyder clearly wants to up the tempo and Trey is a smart guy. He'll get better in that regard.

Yep. In fact, I think he needs to go to it more often. Eventually guys will have to start cheat to their right (his left) on that play and it will open up lanes in the middle of the court.
Yeah I agree, but it's gonna be hard to cheat on one side because his inside-out crossover is about 90% as filthy. This is the most hopeful I've been about the future as a Jazz fan in years.
