It's extremely tragic. The 9 year old girl's parents let her down and this instructor let her down and I fear for her long term mental health following this.

Sounds like the instructor made some very very serious mistakes in the way he positioned himself and it ultimately cost him his life. But the first mistake was having a 9 year old, inexperienced shooter, fire an automatic weapon with a full magazine.

Extreme neglect.

This, in spades.

My daughter had the opportunity to shoot an automatic weapon at the age of 11. They limited the bullets in the clip and started out with the instructor holding the gun with her so she could get used to the recoil a bit. After 4 or 5 clips he slowly eased it off until she shot 2 or 3 clips by herself and it went really well, and she had a lot of fun. To put a fully loaded SMG of that type (high power, low weight, insane recoil) into the hands of a 9 year old and just let her fire it off is insanely irresponsible and we are just lucky that only the shooting instructor got it, and that she didn't spray it all over the place.

I don't have a problem with kids using guns if they are properly trained. But they shouldn't be firing guns with recoil that is hard to control. What's so bad about restricting them to low caliber rifles and handguns until they are strong enough to shoot something else?

Firing the gun with significant kick isn't the problem. The problem is that it was a fully automatic weapon with multiple rounds in the magazine. If there would have been just one cartridge in there or the gun wasn't automatic, there would have been no story.

It's part of the problem. With out that kick she doesn't lose control and the instructor does not get shot. If there were no extra bullets or it was not fully automatic and he would not be shot either. All three played a part.

I have taken kids as young as 5 to a shooting range and taught them about guns and helped them fire a gun. Several times. Teaching them to shoot is fine and very responsible if there are around firearms.

My girls have fired a .22 pistol, .38 revolver and 9mm. I, or another gun familiar adult, helped them hold, aim and fire the gun. They were never holding the weapon without complete adult supervision, even down to not holding it without an adults help. My oldest does not care for it at all but my middle child wants to try the judge (.45 ammo) and the 12 guage.

It is a horrible accident. As for 9 being too young, I think learning to shoot a single shot bolt action 22 rifle at 8 helped me develop safe habits with a gun.

I shot the gun from a rest at first, but eventually I was able to fire the rifle standing, etc. It takes the correct firearm for each shooters strength and experience level.

Why the hell is a 9 year old firing an uzi. That's stupidity of the highest level. As awful as this story is, at least it was just the guy who was the key figure in this stupidity who suffered death. About four years ago some other dumbass father let his 8 year old fire an uzi. Unfortunately for the kid, he suffered the ultimate price there. I'm not anti 2nd Amendment or anything, but anyone who lets a child fire a weapon with significant kickback is an absolute moron (significant for a child at least). Like a special sort of moron, though the poor 8 year old's father was actually an MD.

That is absurd. My daughter knows to look both ways before crossing the street, not to play with matches, to wear a helmet when on a bike or 4 wheeler and to buckle up in the car. Those are all safety habits and she barely turned 7.
