What Utah going to the Pac does to rivalries

I said it a while back. I think this will only help the BYU-utah rivalry. Now, in years that BYU doesnt get to a BCS game, they will usually play the utes in the Vegas bowl. Top team in the MWC vs 4 or 5 place in PAC10/12....they will play every couple years in a bowl now.

If the Utes were playing this coming season in the PAC, I think they would be the favorites to win it. I certainly can't think of 4 teams that would be expected to finish ahead of Utah.

By the way, the Las Vegas Bowl gets the 5th place PAC 10 team as of next year (was the 4th place PAC 10 team in the past.) And it drops a spot lower if the PAC champ is in the national championship and the 2nd place PAC team is BCS eligible (sending the second place PAC team to the Rose Bowl.) So it could be the 6th place PAC team in the Vegas Bowl, and won't be any higher than the 5th place PAC team:

the 2009-10 Pac-10 Bowl Schedule.
Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA (BCS vs. BCS)
Holiday Bowl - San Diego, CA (Pac Ten #2 vs. Big XII #3)
Sun Bowl - El Paso, TX (Pac Ten #3 vs. Big XII #5, Notre Dame tie-in)
Las Vegas Bowl - Las Vegas, NV (Pac Ten #4/5 vs. MWC #1)
Emerald Bowl - San Francisco, CA (ACC #7 vs. Pac Ten #4/5)
Poinsettia Bowl - San Diego, CA (Pac Ten #6 vs. MWC #2)

And here is the 2010-11 Pac-10 Bowl Schedule.
Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA (BCS vs. BCS)
Alamo Bowl - San Antonio, TX (Pac-10 vs. Big 12)
Holiday Bowl - San Diego, CA (Pac-10 vs. Big 12)
Sun Bowl - El Paso, TX (Pac-10 vs. ACC)
Las Vegas Bowl - Las Vegas, NV (Pac-10 vs. Mountain West)
Fight Hunger Bowl - San Francisco, CA (Pac-10 vs. WAC)

So unless the unthinkable happens, Utah will be playing in a better bowl than the Vegas Bowl pretty much every year.

Bowls don't select the fifth place team or whatever, it's the pick of teams. Say if the Sun Bowl wanted Oregon instead of Utah for whatever reason, they can choose them even if they finished lower in the Pac-10.

Makes no difference. The bottom line is the Vegas Bowl is way down the list of Bowls for the PAC, so Utah would likely be in a better bowl most years.

One word for ya: DELUSIONAL.

BYU v. Utah occuring early in the season, and not within the same conference, dilutes the rivalry in a dramatic way. There is a difference when opponents merely dislike each other, rather than actually having something on the line. The only thing at stake is a W. Every game has that.

I bet Max Hall is really happy for the Utes......

Obviously Max Hall is in full support of the induction.

Utah deserved the Pac 12 spot. BYU didn't, they didn't earn it, they did deserve it.

Last season, Utah barely lost (on the road) to the eventual PAC 10 champ. You care to back your claim with a list of four?

And that was with Cain starting. Had Wynn started that game the Utes likely win. Not only that, but Oregon has since kicked their starting QB off the team.

Cal finished tied for the 3rd best record in the PAC last year Utah smashed them in the Poinsettia Bowl. So Utah would have certainly finished better than 5th in the PAC last year. Utah is going to be better this season, and Oregon and USC will both be worse than they were last season.

I would love to see this list of 4 teams that would be expected to finish ahead of Utah in the PAC this year. Obviously we have no idea what any of these teams will look like in 2011, but this year, Utah would have a great shot at winning the PAC, and would absolutely finish higher than 5th.

Hopefully the lack of recruiting by Boylen under more favorable circumstances will expose him as a fraud so the Utes can get back to competing in hoops again. Football will be fine.

Clearly, you're never wrong.

(and by 'wrong', I mean, 'right')

Uh, you better go back and read that Utah to the Pac 10 thread and see who ended up being right. The only thing I didn't get right was I thought the invitation would be later. But even then, after the Texas stuff went down, I called the exact day of the official announcement.

Yeah, I was wrong about a game once (barely). Other than that, I have been pretty much spot on when it comes to the Utes.

So with only 9 teams in the Mountain west... I see them picking up another team to avoid a bye in conference season.

So who???
Utah State??? BYU's new bestest rival
U Nevada Reno???
Memphis???

maybe pick up another Big 12 straggler???

The Utes will enter the Pac-10 in 2011 as a favorite to compete for the conference crown....
And here's another quote from the article
Late Thursday, Whittingham asked a reporter to call on a land line; his cell phone battery had been drained by calls from excited recruits. "It's definitely gotten the attention of recruits," Whittingham said. "We've been to the BCS twice already. We already had a pretty good sales pitch, but this will enhance it."

BYU will never get admitted to the Big 12. The Big 12 will disband before it can happen due to some other sort of defection to somewhere because Texas gets such a ridiculous amount of the TV revenue. So long and thanks for all the fish Texas.

Already recruited recruits or never been contacted to be recruited recruits?

I'd bet the former.
Well if you listen to Whitt's radio interview that I linked to earlier, he says the biggest immediate impact he has seen with the announcement is with the improvement to recruiting.
