my response is R(a8)a7, to protect the threatened black pawn. (from my side of the board the R on the R King back row forward to the next space on the same file)

I enjoy this a lot because I feel free to just try **** and see where it goes. The guys I play with weekly are worried about their ratings and some of them are quite dick-ish about the "level of play" and post-game analysis. It was funny when I ended up 2nd in the last rated event I took place in.

Has Walter Browne ever played in any of your tournaments? I think he was based in Reno for a time. Anyway, years ago when I was a kid and watching him play a tournament game and standing too close, he glared at me and shooed me away with a wave of his hand. Maybe he's retired by now but he was a strong GM and an interesting player in his day and I always liked his game.
 
Just out of curiosity (and iin no way because I am so very weak in opening theory :) ), do any of you play Chess960 aka Fisher Random Chess? I've always wanted to give that a try.

I dabbled. Didn't really do much for me. I didn't mind it when we had a setup that ended up going from king on one end and then down the power structure, as in Q, R, R, B, B, N, N or something similar. It doesn't really change the focus of the game, control the center or as much of the board as you can, but it does throw most opening theory out the window and can lead to some interesting mid-game exchanges. I think Fischer liked this because he was very much into the hyper-modern opening systems and this was as hyper-modern as it could get. It really tests your ability to analyze a positions from many angles deeply rather than just knowing the mainlines of different opening systems.


edit: caveat, I never played this seriously as in tournaments or rated matches or anything, all coffeehouse rules kind of stuff so we didn't adhere too strictly to the new "rules".
 
OB I'm up for a game of that if you want to set up the board. I don't care about config and I know there are sites that get into the stipulations of the setups if you want to follow the rules closely.

I have never met him although I have heard his name mentioned once or twice. I think his time here was pretty short or just an extension of being in California.
