Of course, you're right. Along that same line of thinking, you could hire a contractor to build your house, even though he has never done it, has zero training, has zero real life experience with building a house, but has watched every episode of "Home Improvement" and "This Old House". On a separate note, I just came back from a 4-hour basketball session. Every inch of my body hurts. Even my vision is blurry. It has nothing to do with anything, but I thought people need to know about my temporary pain.

Hah. I've been a lazy fatass for most of my life, until I decided to get in shape last year. And it is probably the best decision I've ever made. It's like being a different person. Now I love going on long nature hikes, playing sports, and I don't have to worry about hyperventilating like a fool every time I have to exert some effort at work (I have a job where I have to get into awkward spots to fix large machinery).

There is another awesome effect of losing weight that nobody ever talks about. Having gone from about 25% body fat to around 14%, I have noticed a major increase in the size of, um, you know what.

I'm always appreciative and happy when my wife cooks..... even if it sucks. (Which is rare)

My wife and I worked it out that I take care of the finances and she takes care of the home. I help out and take care of my honey-do list (like changing lightbulbs and figuring out how to get the TV to show that darn Wii, and find the lost remotes, etc.), and I have always told her that whatever she makes I will eat.

One day I came home after a fairly trying day at work, and I knew from text messages she had a trying day too, with the boys doing all they could to get out of chores and just generally nothing going right. As I walked in the door she was crying over the sink about how she burned the hamburgers and over-microwaved the frozen buns. I just calmly walked into the storm of the boys complaining, the girls also crying because mom was, and got a bun, put on my fixings, took a double charcoal-patty, sat down and took a big bite and said loudly "honey thanks so much for making dinner for me, I really appreciate it, I was so hungry". It was total crap (my wife can be a good cook, but she dislikes it a lot, so all too often things don't go as planned) and tasted like eating burnt wood on a cardboard bun with mayo ketchup mustard onion and pickle, but I ate the whole thing. Everyone calmed down and eventually they all sat with me and ate the dinner. Later that night she thanked me in most spectacular fashion. I have to bank moments like that to help weather the storms when it is me being the dick/moron/idiot/*******, which occurs far more often, imo, and probably more often then she lets on. It's part of being married, the good, the bad, the foul-tasting, and the occasionally fantastic all rolled into one.

Nothing ever goes according to plan. All you can ever do is your best. Every experience in life isn't meant to be for every person. Find the moments, and the people, that make you happy and try to hold onto them. That's about all we can do.

Anyone else besides me notice that the inner liners on boxes of cereal and crackers and stuff is getting next to impossible to open without tearing it all to bits and having the Cheerios (or whatever) go flying everywhere?

It's like they're packaging this stuff to withstand a drone strike or something.

Anyone else besides me notice that the inner liners on boxes of cereal and crackers and stuff is getting next to impossible to open without tearing it all to bits and having the Cheerios (or whatever) go flying everywhere?

It's like they're packaging this stuff to withstand a drone strike or something.

I hate the foil/plastic lids on bottles of stuff that won't come off in one piece without a damn knife, too.

It's about being air- and water-tight and, along with packing in an inert gas (like nitrogen) that minimizes oxygen in the packaging, allowing them to buffer their production when sales are stronger and ingredients, which being agricultural in origin tend to fluctuate a lot in price both year to year and during the year, are cheap. Then they can hold it for quite a while before putting it on the shelf after stamping it with that "best before date".

For example, and I know this isn't cereal but it is one of the best examples of holding a short-term commodity for long-term production, fresh orange juice is anything but "fresh" when you open that bottle. It can, and does, sit for months, and even years, at a time, in carefully temperature- and bacteria-controlled vats, with all of the pulp and most of the flavor removed through filtering and processing. Then when they are ready to bottle they can revive it with a carefully concocted mix of vitamins, flavoring, and pulp to get the flavor profile and texture that is signature for each brand (Tropicana, Nature-made, whatever). And, since the product is never frozen, and the flavor/vitamin/pulp blend is from all natural sources (mostly from orange juice they are currently processing) they can still call it "fresh". If you want really fresh orange juice, buy frozen and make it with filtered water. It is closer to a real orange than the bottled stuff ever was or ever will be.

I use one by default for all packaging now. I can't believe how advanced the science of impossible to open packaging has become.
